Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has visited Taipei for the first time, giving a speech in which he urged the incoming Trump administration to continue supporting Taiwan.

00:06support for Taiwan at a speech here in Taipei just days before Donald Trump is set to take

00:11office once again.

00:13Pence was nominally here as part of an educational exchange event co-hosted by a university from

00:19his home state of Indiana, but in his speech he focused mostly on describing what he called

00:24the threats posed to the Pacific region by China and reiterating support for Taiwan.

00:52Pence declined to comment on whether or not he spoke with President-elect Donald Trump

00:56about his trip here, but he did say that he supported the US continuing to help Taiwan

01:01with its self-defense and the signing of a US-Taiwan trade deal.

01:05Now Pence is reportedly going to meet with Taiwan President Lai Ching-da later, a meeting

01:10that Beijing is likely to condemn.
