Commission presents new plan to boost cybersecurity in healthcare sector

The European Commission has presented a new action plan to enhance the cybersecurity of the healthcare sector amid a rise in ransomware attacks.

00:07attacks quicker. In 2023, there were 309 cyber security incidents in health centers in the

00:14EU, a growing risk for both patients and hospitals. European Health Commissioner Oliver Varely

00:20believes that hospitals should invest in cyber security as much as in medical equipment.

00:27Do not overlook that part. We understand that the health care institutions are more focused

00:34on organizing the health care they provide for the patients, but this is part and parcel

00:41of it. Despite the economic impact, which is estimated at an average of 300,000 euros

00:47in major incidents, Brussels has so far made no provision for financial support for medical

00:52institutions. According to the European Cyber Security Agency, the greatest risks include

00:58the theft of patient data or the disruption of health care services.
