00:07from Venezuela and El Salvador by 18 months.

00:11They have temporary protected status, an initiative created by Congress in 1990 to prevent deportations

00:17to unsafe countries.

00:19It gives migrants authorization to work in increments of 18 months, but doesn't provide

00:24a long-term path to citizenship.

00:27The Department for Homeland Security also extended TPS for more than 103,000 Ukrainians.

00:33But it faces an uncertain future under incoming President Donald Trump, who tried to curtail

00:38its use during his first term.

00:41Trump suggested he would scale back the use of TPS and policies granting temporary status

00:46as he pursues mass deportations.

00:49During his first administration, Trump tried to end TPS for migrants from El Salvador,

00:54Haiti and Nicaragua, but those attempts were blocked in court.
