Newcastle claim important Carabao Cup first leg lead over Arsenal

Newcastle United defeated Arsenal 0-2 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi final at the Emirates Stadium. Daniel Wales reports.

00:00Newcastle United made the best possible start to the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final

00:07away at Arsenal, winning by two goals to nil. Alexander Izak and then Anthony Gordon in

00:13the second half were on the score sheet to condemn the Gunners to an unexpected home

00:18defeat. Both teams had gone close before the first goal came. Newcastle had seen efforts

00:23from Sandro Tonali and Joe Linton go over the bar, whilst Gabriel Martinelli had hit

00:29the post for the hosts. Izak's goal, though, towards the end of the first half put Newcastle

00:34in control, which they then cemented early in the second period when Gordon latched on

00:40to a rebound after Izak's shot had been saved by Arsenal goalkeeper Davit Raya. The two

00:45teams will return to St James' Park in February to see who can reach Wembley Stadium and a

00:51chance at glory in this year's Carabao Cup against either Tottenham or Liverpool.
