Meet the anti-Santa: Central Europe’s ‘Krampus’

‘Krampus’ is a festive figure from Central European folklore who accompanies St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) and punishes naughty children by whipping them or dragging them to his lair.

On December 5th, known as Krampusnacht (Krampus Night), the streets come alive with Krampusläufe (Krampus runs).

People dress as Krampus, donning intricate masks, furs, and horns. These costumed figures parade through towns, rattling chains, ringing bells, and playfully frightening onlookers, particularly adults.

The atmosphere is both festive and spooky, with the intention of reminding everyone of the consequences of bad behavior.
