Weatherbird Rag – King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band 1923
In the first recording session on April 6 1923 in Richmond, Indiana, the most famous New Orleans Jazz Band of Joe “King” Oliver together with Louis Armstrong played 9 tunes. One of these was “Weather Bird Rag” These were the first recordings of Louis Armstrong and he played second cornet. Oliver’s band in Chicago was the best and most influential hot jazz band. Every jazz musician would come and listen to this fantastic band. Today we are very privileged to still have their recordings and I’m pleased to post these on youtube and on dailymotion
Next to Joe and Louis we also hear Johnny Dodds clarinet, his brother Baby Dodds on drums. Lil Hardin on piano, who eventually became Louis Armstrong’s wife, Bud Scott banjo and Honore Dutray trombone.
