China respected Macao deal, says Portuguese leader who signed declaration   As China celebrates the 25th anniversary of Macao's return, former Portuguese president, and Prime Minister Aníbal Cavaco Silva recalls signing the Joint Declaration between the two countries.

00:00We want to close a chapter of our history with dignity and safeguarding the interests of the Portuguese living in Macau.

00:14And I believe that was also important for China, because the return of Hong Kong and Macau was crucial for the Chinese leaders.

00:29I remember very well, when Xi Jinping, in the meeting we had on the precise day in which I signed the joint declaration in Beijing,

00:41underlining that it was very important for China to solve the question of Macau.

00:51And in my opinion, it was a balanced agreement with Portugal and China.
