Georgian lawmakers have elected former Premier League footballer and critic of the West Mikheil Kavelashvili as president.

Opposition parties have boycotted parliament since an October election, and as a result Kavelashvili received 224 out of 225 votes. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside parliament, waving red cards.
