Blinken says US has had 'direct contact' with Syria's HTS rebels who toppled al-Assad

Speaking at a press conference in the Jordanian city Aqaba, Blinken said that America and its allies 'have an important stake in helping the Syrian people chart this new path.'

00:07Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebel group in Syria.

00:11Blinken said he'd laid out the principles for ongoing support for Syria's political

00:15transition.

00:17He said it was important to work with HTS to build the inclusive, nonsectarian, peaceful

00:22and sovereign state the Syrian people want.

00:25Here in Jordan, he also urged Israel and Hamas to conclude a ceasefire and hostage

00:30return deal to bring an end to more than a year of war.

00:34Those comments come on the same day the Palestinian medical official said at least seven people

00:39were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City.

00:43The strike hit a school which was sheltering displaced families.

00:46The hospital which received the casualty said at least 12 people had been injured.

00:51Among the dead was a woman and her two-day-old baby girl.
