03:27Welcome to Beyond the Tape, I'm your host Marc Bessan.
03:38Welcome to our viewers across Trinidad and Tobago, and of course, across the world.
03:44Today it's Friday, TGIF, and today we have with us the infamous Corporal Shabadi from
03:51the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, and of course, also attached to the St. James
03:55Youth Club.
03:56Welcome, sir.
03:57Thank you for inviting me to this season.
03:58Same to you.
03:59Thank you for the invitation, my brother.
04:00Always an honor.
04:01Well, certainly we have a lot to talk about today, and one of the very disheartening stories
04:08that we will just touch on, and we'll get more into it in the second segment, involves
04:13a female that was arrested on Wednesday involving the alleged abuse of a six- and seven-year-old
04:22two boys in the Claxton Bay area.
04:25Apparently, they were allegedly, she had kept them in a dog kennel and locked in a basement
04:32at a home, and over a period of time, we understand, allegedly, these children were also beaten,
04:39and the police took that suspect into custody on Wednesday, and we understand she remains
04:46in police custody as of this afternoon, as the police and officers from the Special Victims
04:53Department continue their investigation into this particular case.
04:57Mr. Shabadi.
04:58Well, it's a topic I've become very emotional.
05:04Working with young people for almost 32 years is not a topic that you smile about and you
05:10enjoy talking, because you're a father, you see, and you've been working with young people
05:14for years, and any society that kind of protects, you know, the women, the geriatric, and its
05:20children, we have lost points.
05:23And when children grow up into this world and they belong to a home, the first thing
05:27that we want, most guaranteed, is their protection, a cage, the Basanta cage.
05:35I mean, listen, I have seen and I have known about several cases, the only first one, eh?
05:40Right here in Trinidad, this beloved country, Trinidigo, you know, children, bodies found
05:45in a barrel, you know, the famous child who was bothered and killed.
05:51You have so many cases of children being abused, it's a sad day in this country, and they must
05:57leave no stone unturned.
06:00You know, normally you hear a man, reports of a man and abuse, very, you know, there
06:06are very few cases in terms of a woman, but abuse is abuse.
06:09Whether it comes from a woman, whether it comes from a man, our children must be protected.
06:14And I want to salute, I want to call it the whistleblower, the person who informed the
06:19police, the person who informed the authorities, and I know that this matter will be dealt
06:26with.
06:27That is madness, my brother.
06:28You said that we just came out of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
06:32Yes.
06:33And as we would have discussed, over the last 16 days, that as Corporal Chabudy pointed
06:40out, that gender-based violence does not only affect women, but also children, and
06:44by a lesser extent, men, but all in all, it encompasses everyone.
06:48Yes, even the elderly, even the physically challenged.
06:51You know, I heard stories, I know what stories we could spend here all talking about, but
06:56we're not on that.
06:57It's just that we need to protect our children, we need to protect the elderly, need to know
07:02that there are checks and balance in terms of homes and institutions that are set up,
07:07you know?
07:09And it is very unfortunate.
07:10I want to commend you, I want to commend the media for bringing this to the fore, because
07:15people need to know that there's no secret, there's no special arrangement in terms of
07:22when a child is being abused.
07:23No is no, and we want to distance ourselves from whether it's a boy.
07:28And you know, sometimes, my brother, you'll hear parents talking to children anyhow, and
07:34you will tell the parent, no, you can't speak to him, so, no, he can take it.
07:38That is how you understand, that is how I communicate with him.
07:41Of course, I shout, you don't know that?
07:42Them children only understand one language, verbal abuse, obscene, is first, second, third,
07:48and fourth language, toxic environment, and then we want to find out and ask some questions
07:53why our children are behaving so, why we have so many gangs, why our girls are running away
07:57from home, how come we can't, it's right here, too much abuse home, too much of psychologically
08:04verbal and sexual abuse taken on, and I want to tip my cap to the Child Protection Unit,
08:09I want to tip my cap to every officer who is in support of members of the public, who
08:14from this ugly behavior, would abuse our children.
08:18Certainly, and we'll discuss this more in our second segment, we're going to go to our
08:23headlines now.
08:34Alright, those are some of the headlines within the last 24 hours, and we want to do some
09:00housekeeping, of course.
09:02A couple of videos that came to our attention, the first is, it's a very common place to
09:10see these kinds of videos, around this time especially, an attempted snatch and run on
09:16Charlotte Street earlier today.
09:19I believe the suspect was apprehended, yes, there he goes, by the police officers who
09:27were working in that area, and of course, as we tend to tell the members of the public,
09:33especially around this time, to be very vigilant of their surroundings, when they're coming
09:37out of stores, car parks, banks, even everything, because you never know who's looking on, and
09:44you never know what the opportunity they're trying to, whatever it be, money or items
09:49of value.
09:51The police are out, they are out of their numbers, I want to commend the senior superintendent
09:57judge of Potter Swim Division, and all the divisions, we know what Christmas is, we know
10:02the anti-sloppers, we know who they prey on, but more than that, we want to educate members
10:07of the public to be inconspicuous with their money, you know, don't be flashing gold, don't
10:13be flashing trying to get singles and twenties, and you know, when you're doing transaction,
10:18make sure you have a receipt, because there are all different kind of people claiming
10:22that they are vendors, and you have to be very circumspect, you know, and I want to
10:26commend the police, I want to commend members of the public, we don't know vigilante, we
10:29don't know body, you know, make the arrest, call the police, and the police will, you
10:34know, make sure you do the transactions, and that is a season, however, we have to make
10:39sure that the elements are told, not this year.
10:43Certainly, and you know, this gun violence continues to raise ugly head here in Trinidad
10:49and Tobago, and only last night, there was a shooting at a bar in the Valencia area,
10:56I understand at least a couple of people were shot and wounded in that particular incident,
11:03you know, you're seeing one of the injured personnel here, near a stool or a certain
11:08area in that bar, they were taken to hospital, and of course, they remain in serious condition,
11:17a couple of the victims in that shooting.
11:22Gun violence has no place in this country, and we need to also, when you fight on that,
11:27you must be, there's no time to mark time, there's no time to put no reverse gear, the
11:31fight is on, and there's some people who want to claim this country, and they want to hold
11:37this country to ransom, but it is not for sale, and we want to make sure that the violence
11:43that we've seen, that we let them know that it has no place in our country.
11:48So unfortunately, this morning, people on social media, somebody took a photo of a gentleman
11:55that was found in the, off somewhere, off the TST site there, closer to the Hilton Hotel
12:04in that vicinity area.
12:06Apparently, he was, his hands and his feet were tied, and based on initial information
12:13from police officers, he seemed to have been shot in the head.
12:17He was later identified as Karim Batiste, also known as Scooby of Field Trace in Degomartin.
12:25So that was murder 582 for the year, up to last night it was 580.
12:33And just before that last night, police also found what they suspected is another homicide
12:40of a body found along the Churchill Resort Highway in the Urupuni area.
12:46Died under similar circumstances, I understand.
12:50Police believe that he was shot, and his body dumped in this area here.
12:56So he would have been murder victim 581, and unfortunately, Mr. Batiste was murder victim
13:03582 this morning.
13:05But yes, and this cat and mouse game, they continue to play, you know, day after day.
13:13And we continue to ask members of the public and appeal to committee, the establishment
13:18of New World Watch Group, being your progress keeper, all that is part and parcel, don't
13:23give up.
13:24You know, I know that sometimes you're watching these videos and you're saying it's, but there's
13:28a sense of hope.
13:30And we know that through the media and through partnership with so many different stakeholders,
13:34that 2025 will continue to put a fight on.
13:36It's not how much times you fall, you know, it's how much times you get up.
13:40Yeah, we are hopeful that that number will dip considerably in the new year.
13:46And we're hopeful that the TTPS, with the cooperation of the citizens of Trinidad and
13:51Tobago and communities, will get that number down.
13:54We're going to take a short break, and we'll be back after this.

17:25Welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host, Mark Vasant,
17:28today joined by Corporal Shabadi from the Trinidad and Zimbabwe Police Service
17:32and the St. James Youth Club.
17:34And we have a close family friend on the line
17:37involving the same alleged abuse subject matter
17:41we were speaking about earlier on.
17:43Good afternoon, sir.
17:44Good afternoon.
17:45How are you?
17:47Well, I'm not so fine, you know.
17:49Things, you know, I'm not so fine.
17:51I'm not so fine.
17:52I'm not so fine.
17:53I'm not so fine, you know.
17:54Things, you know, not so as they should be.
17:57And we just wanted to get an overview of this really horrible case
18:02about two young boys. I know you are very close with the family.
18:06Just give us an overview and perspective, without calling names, of course,
18:09about what has transpired over the last year.
18:14Okay.
18:16We started sometime March, right?
18:19Before March, the children used to be disciplined by their mother.
18:26Physical discipline.
18:28Yes.
18:29And the husband used to be talking to her about the physical discipline
18:37and try to instead take away things from them when they misbehave
18:41or give them squats.
18:44Like to push up something now, right?
18:47Exercise it.
18:49Instead of punishing and beating them.
18:52So it so happened this evening, that evening, sometime in early March,
18:58he came home and his son told him,
19:02Mommy will beat him.
19:04And he asked the mother and the mother said,
19:06Well, yes, I give him some licks because he was behaving bad.
19:10So he do his normal chores and then he beat them
19:14and while putting them to sleep, the normal thing,
19:17putting them to bed early and saying their prayers,
19:20he hugged him up and he said,
19:23Daddy, you're hurting me.
19:25He said, Oh, I'm not hurting you. I'm giving you normal hugs.
19:28He said, No, you're squeezing my hand when I'm getting licks.
19:31He said, I'm not squeezing your hand.
19:33You see?
19:34And when he raised up the gloves and the shirt,
19:38he saw the arm went, well, blue back.
19:41And it was swollen.
19:43So he said, What is this here?
19:45Then he said, He raised up his shirt in the back
19:48and he showed the back and all also had blue back marks.
19:52So he called his wife and asked, What is this going on here?
19:55She said, It's a pregnant child.
19:57But we didn't realize it.
19:59He said, So bad. Look at this child.
20:01Blue back marks on the arm and on the back.
20:03That is real licks you give this child.
20:06So she started arguing with him.
20:08I said, It's a pregnant child.
20:10Anyhow, he decided it's going too far.
20:14Right?
20:15Because she had beaten the children before several times.
20:17Both children, four-year-old and five-year-old, six-year-old.
20:21So he decided to report it to the station of the child abuse
20:24because if he don't do anything and it won't get out,
20:28he could be charged too.
20:30So he made the report when he went to the station
20:34and he made the report and the police looked at it.
20:37They took the report but they also told him,
20:39Boy, you need to carry this child to get medical attention.
20:45So he took the child down to the San Juan General Hospital.
20:48They examined the child and we brought him back home.
20:53The police did consider the investigation
20:56and they submitted a report.
20:58They got a report from the hospital,
21:00a doctor's report from the hospital.
21:03Concerning what transpired with the visit.
21:07Can you tell us when did they find out
21:10that these young boys were being locked in a dog kennel
21:13and in the basement of the home?
21:15Right.
21:16Now, it's during the cold.
21:18Because of the trauma the children have suffered,
21:20they couldn't sleep at night.
21:22So he decided to visit a psychologist,
21:27or whatever you call them, some sleep,
21:29to get them some sleep.
21:32And it's during the compression that it came out
21:36that the children were locked up in the kennel
21:40and in the basement by their mother
21:42for disciplinary action.
21:46And that is when the father found out
21:49about the children being locked up in the kennel
21:53and in the basement.
21:57Yes, I'm listening.
21:59And so, where we are right now as of today,
22:02I understand that the person is in custody
22:06still after the arrest on Wednesday.
22:09But what is the latest in terms of the police
22:12and how are they moving forward?
22:14My understanding is that we reported child abuse
22:19in the most abusive state,
22:21where both children were beaten badly,
22:23especially the big boys.
22:24And it bruises on your medical report.
22:26Right?
22:28Now, we expected to take action on that
22:30and we were wondering why it's taking so long
22:32to get action.
22:34But then, now we are understanding that
22:37they were not looking at that,
22:39they were really looking at the locking up
22:41of the kennel and the basement.
22:45Now, this basement, Mr. Bharat,
22:48and Mr...
22:51What's that?
22:52This basement has chemicals.
22:56It has a generator.
22:58It has gasoline containers.
23:01It has exercise,
23:03it has tools, paint, all kinds of things.
23:06And it has one entrance.
23:08Right?
23:09So, when you close that door, it's total darkness.
23:11What are you talking about?
23:12Five-year-old and a six-year-old in there?
23:14Yes?
23:15The kennel on the western side,
23:17there's someone beaten on that
23:19one basement on the western side.
23:21Yes?
23:22This is horrible.
23:23But we were not aware of that, yes?
23:25As I tell you.
23:26Yes.
23:27To the final, to the council.
23:29Right?
23:30But then again, what about this beating,
23:32this child abuse, there's so much leaks,
23:34and you have video footage.
23:35The police received video footage
23:37of all these times, dates,
23:40that the children were getting leaks.
23:43And you say, you know,
23:44all you want to do is transfer the kennel.
23:46So, what about the child abuse?
23:49Well, Kuala...
23:51In addition to this,
23:53he started to get...
23:56He started to get threats.
23:59Right?
24:00We don't know where he's coming from,
24:02but he started to get threats
24:03since this has happened.
24:07Right?
24:08So, it is very...
24:09We're in a situation where
24:13we're looking for some justice.
24:15All right, Kuala.
24:16We certainly want to thank you
24:18for taking the time
24:19for bringing us up to speed on this,
24:21and we are certain
24:22that behind this program,
24:24we are also seeking to get assistance
24:27for the person involved
24:29and some very senior officers
24:31I have already spoken with
24:33and have given me the assurance,
24:35and I will be following up,
24:37to make sure that,
24:38at the end of the day,
24:39justice is served in this particular matter.
24:41So, rest assured.
24:43Okay, thank you, sir.
24:45Most welcome.
24:46Wow.
24:47Corporal Shabedi,
24:48really, really sad story.
24:49Wow, wow.
24:50This Christmas time,
24:52this is not...
24:53This is not a time
24:54where you're buying gifts
24:55and bringing Mary to home.
24:57This is not how you start December.
25:00I am sure the head
25:01of the Child Protection Unit is listening.
25:03I am sure the Commissioner of Police is listening.
25:06I am sure the head
25:07of Southern Division is listening.
25:09I am sure ACP Maisa is listening.
25:11I am sure several stakeholders are listening.
25:14The insurance authority,
25:16who is tasked with ensuring
25:18that the children are cared for.
25:19I know that now,
25:20this thing is in public information.
25:23It doesn't guide our game.
25:25I do understand the game of
25:27they're taking photos of the cage and the kennel,
25:30and then all that is tantamount to abuse,
25:34physical, psychological,
25:35and as if...
25:36I really want to commend...
25:38Is that your father, grandfather?
25:39No, no, no.
25:40This is a close family friend.
25:42I want to commend him.
25:43It's good to see men.
25:45You know,
25:46it's one thing when women come out
25:48and speak up,
25:49but when men come out
25:50and dissent themselves,
25:52I want to commend them
25:53because these boys are saying,
25:54help me, please.
25:55I think he said the father
25:56would have made a report
25:57of the alleged abuse to the police
26:00when he found out
26:01he saw the marks and so on.
26:03That is commendable.
26:04I commend the father for that.
26:05And I want to commend you,
26:07and I'm sure that
26:08the father needs to be given the undertaking
26:10that you have nothing to worry about.
26:12The police will ensure
26:14that due diligence
26:16and that an arrest is made
26:18and that the young men
26:19who went through this abuse,
26:20that they will find the necessary help.
26:22That is really unfortunate.
26:24Really unfortunate.
26:25We really want to thank that caller
26:27for throwing some light on that,
26:29and we are hopeful
26:30that the police officers
26:31that are listening out there
26:32in the Southern Division,
26:33as well as the seniors,
26:35will take heed
26:36and ensure there is a thorough
26:38and transparent investigation

30:26The Trinidad and Tobago Police Youth Club
30:28was established to foster
30:30positive relationships between the police
30:32and the youth of the community.
30:34Launched in 1974
30:36to deal with at risk youth
30:38The first youth clubs were a pilot project under the leadership of several police officers.
30:43In the early 1980s, the program aimed to provide young people with opportunities for personal
30:49development, leadership training, and engagement in various community service activities.
30:55In 1986, I was transferred to the Public Relations and Welfare Office that was on Rice Road.
31:04And that office was responsible for youth clubs. And I formed a police youth club in
31:10the Diggle-Martin area. In 1990, I formed another youth club in Point Camana.
31:15Around that time, the youth club initiative had spurned upon the island of Tobago,
31:22and I got involved first as a special reserve police officer when we decided that we
31:30will do something for the young people within the community of Roxbury and Environ.
31:36My interest in community policing and being a leader of the police youth club,
31:43you cannot get a better feeling when you are working with young people and seeing a transformation
31:49of their lives. Two young men were arrested. I took the opportunity to go and speak to them
31:54at the cell, and I realized they were totally lost. So that after my duty, I would go down to
31:59the school and offer my services in the form of a lecture, what is the law on new criminal
32:04consequences, speaking to young people in terms of choices, and by extension, building a relationship
32:11because they had an unfortunate view of police officers. And the opportunity to let them know
32:16that we too are not only interested in locking up, arresting, and charging, putting them before the
32:21court. While I was doing traditional work at the charge room, I saw the need to be more proactive,
32:27and that's where it all started. This pilot project set the foundation for what became
32:32one of the most effective crime-fighting tools within the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
32:38The police youth clubs have some of the most subscribed youth development institutions in
32:43Trinidad and Tobago. Being able to make that positive change with the youth, the fact that
32:48we're able to reach them and reach the parents makes a difference. Hearing the good reviews from
32:53the parents saying, hey, I've seen the improvement in my child, is what gives us that pride and that
32:59comfort that we are doing something. One of the programs implemented was the SEA PUSH program,
33:05which garnered outstanding results. So the SEA PUSH program was designed for students who were
33:11scoring below 30 percent. It's actually to work with them to get them above the 30 percent
33:16percentile, to ensure that they get a place into secondary school. We got, I think it was 16 children
33:21I had, where we got a 100 percent pass rate. And then the year after, which would have been last year,
33:27we had 14 or 15 children. I think they were the greatest results, whether we got
33:33St. Mary's College, St. Francis Boys College, St. Francis Girls College, we got ASHA Boys, ASHA Girls.
33:39So it was tremendous to know that these children were scoring 20 and 15 percent and was able to
33:46score over 90 to get into these colleges. Society depends on ensuring that young people are molded,
33:55molded from young and supported so that they can in fact be productive adults. So
34:03youth club was an attraction for me from my entry in the police service. I worked in Eastern and I
34:11worked with the youth club there. Throughout my career, I worked with youth clubs. When I reached
34:16the office of Commissioner of Police in 2012, I had the opportunity to dictate
34:25the extent of work that I wanted done with youth clubs.
34:30Certainly a very, I don't know, a really good, great milestone there for the
34:36police youth club. You being part of that journey over the last 50 years, not all 50, but I'm sure
34:44for a lot of those years, you would have been, you know, instrumental in shaping the young minds
34:50along with other police officers who we saw there, not only them on the screens, but others.
34:56And, you know, that SEA push program was really inspiring to see that, you know,
35:00they took these children from 30 percentile up to the 90s. And it's really, it's really
35:07very inspiring to see that the youth club could have such a dramatic impact in a positive way
35:13on these children. Yeah, and that's crime fighting. That's a proactive approach because once you
35:18address literacy, you're addressing the question of how you think, how you feel, your self-esteem,
35:23your sense of worth. And we have to commend youth clubs for doing excellent work in your homework.
35:28And, you know, I was talking to, I want to commend Miss Archie on the corporate communications and
35:34audiovisual. That's an absolutely excellent video. I want to salute ma'am. She's really
35:39innovative, thinking out of the box, and to put together an absolutely beautiful video.
35:44You know, when you talk 50 years, you're talking about Sergeant Otelopia. That is the man who
35:50started Jun Jun Police Club. You're talking about Ma'am Young. You're talking about Mr. Ewing,
35:57who started the Cochrane Police Club. You're talking about Inspector Reed. You're talking
36:02about my friend in Western Division, WPC Marshan, the Bagatelle Police Club. You're talking about
36:09listen to me, Corporal Reginald Jackson. I have met some beautiful people in this journey.
36:15Ma'am Kathleen Weeks, Assistant Commissioner, Patsy Joseph, Beckers, the amount of, you know,
36:20you're getting in trouble when you start calling names. Yes. You stay on your program,
36:23then you don't call my name. But I have met so much of wonderful people on this journey.
36:27And Mr. Hazel and myself literally grew up. Sergeant Batiste from Manzanilla Police Club,
36:33Goodman, Senior Superintendent Mark, who passed away. This is Mark, you know, Sergeant Brassy.
36:39These people encouraged you, they nurtured you. You know, they allow you to continue to do good
36:45work. And more than that, you know, the video couldn't capture everybody, unfortunately.
36:51We want to salute even the stakeholders, the small shops, the hardware, the people who come
36:57on board and say, Officer, I would like to be of service. You know, I would like to come and do.
37:01They are the sum total of ensuring and continue to guarantee why the Police Club celebrates
37:07this jubilee. And I really, really feel honored being a part of this family. I would say it again,
37:12and I make no beef in it, but when I was introduced to Police Club, I never worked one day.
37:20It was never a hard day. So you love, you say you love media and all that, and nobody on TV
37:26called you. I mean, they say half an hour, ask them, Mr. Shaboli, where are you?
37:31It's that love I have, too, for young people and for all those who have been surrounded with
37:35Master Dutton, Yohan C, G4S, CUN Lebanese, a set of wonderful people who have contributed.
37:42And I want to say, I want to congratulate, I want to thank the Commissioner of Police,
37:47because she attended a function last year, and she said, but Mr. Shaboli, we have to celebrate.
37:52So there's a lot of things going to take place. We will be having an award launching,
37:56we're having a cultural show. And I want to commend Ms. Graves. Ms. Graves is a secretary.
38:02You call Ms. Graves a beautiful human being. And she sits with the Secretariat. Ms. Williams,
38:08I want to thank you very much, Ma'am Williams, who's in charge of the unit now,
38:12really, really doing justice. And for all those who behind the scene, you may not see them on
38:18the video, but a lot of beautiful people who have contributed, have made invaluable contribution
38:24towards the Police Club. And of course, I want to thank my wife before anybody else. She has
38:29been very good, supportive, and the organizing committee and the members of the Management Board,
38:34blessings, and that is gratifying. That is the gospel of the police service. That is the good
38:41news. Police officers working with young people, knitting and producing them before they get
38:48in the hands of the criminal element. And as one brother say,
38:52they're recruiting again, young people volunteering. And that's a sad day, bro.
38:56Yes, indeed. And we want to thank you and the rest of the officers for the illustrious work
39:02you will continue to do in front of the scenes and behind the scenes. Yes. All right, we're
39:07going to take a quick break and we'll be back. Stay with us.

42:13host, Mark Bassan, joined today by Corporal Shabadi of the Trinidad-Tobago Police Service
42:18and the St. James Youth Club. I just want to remind you of the numbers to call 623-1711 Extensions
42:241992, 1993, 1996, and 1997. I think we have a call on the line. Caller, good evening.
42:32Yes. Go ahead.
42:34I want to give both of you a season's greetings to your families. Now, that is a concern. The
42:43police youth club is a concern. Now, the most disciplined children from the police youth club,
42:49and when they reach the age of 18, 19, it's a draft them into the police service. Maybe a police
42:54officer who wants to be a police officer is the most disciplined organization. Yesterday,
43:01Mr. Bassan, I was trying to get in, but the line was busy, constantly new parking, and he
43:07was in front of some police station, and people were behaving like fools. Now, if I was a police
43:12officer, okay, I want to park in the district station where I work, where I can see my vehicles,
43:20because if you park down the road where you can't see the vehicles, you'll have bandits,
43:25wicked people who know you as police, some of them don't like police, and they'll destroy your
43:29vehicle. Police officers must have the right to park by the compound where they work, Mr. Bassan,
43:37and the other thing is, every police station in this country should go.
43:42Have a lot of derelict vehicles there too. Racist, good, space. Call the scrap iron people,
43:49let them take their vehicles when the case is finished. Robberies and stolen vehicles are
43:55cases. Take it too long. Most of them cases are finished and done, and the vehicles still
44:01park up in the compound. The police officers can't get to park there. They park on the road.
44:05They really get off. How about this one out here?
44:09Thanks, sir. Kuala, you want to take it on first?
44:11Yeah, well, first of all, I want to tell the gentleman to go to the head of the class.
44:14That's the objective of the police. You have to make them good citizens, and it's not just lawyers
44:19and police officers, but missionary and carpenters, and you want to uphold your business. You know,
44:24we just want you to be patriotic, the love of the country. So, my brother, go to the head of the
44:28class. Concerning the vehicles, that has a process. It has to go to court, then they have to
44:34declare it for sale. Then you have, you know, an area where the vehicles are placed, and then
44:40afterwards, it's auction off, and there's a whole process. There's a whole legal aspect to that. I
44:46don't know if you want to, he's probably screaming the process should be a little faster, and I agree
44:50with him. However, that process must go through the court system, and therefore, there's a
44:56department that looks into that particular part. Yes, and I want to agree with you, and of course,
45:01the parking issue you might have missed part thereof is that there is a space located, a car
45:06park located for, you know, near the police in the Port of Spain area. The issue is not so much of
45:15the parking areas that are not, there are actually no parking zones, but there's a car park
45:20thereby, but it's not, it's a private car park. So, I guess it's the onus is on the police service
45:26to provide that service to their own, instead of there being parking illegally, and I think that's
45:32where the issue arose, right? But we don't want to dwell too much on that. We want to quickly touch on
45:36the annual Christmas street coming up with the St. James Youth Club. Yeah, I want to use this platform
45:41not just for St. James, but for all the clubs that are having Christmas streets. Christmas street is
45:45an important component. You cannot be involved in a police club and do have Christmas streets.
45:50Something is wrong with your club, you know, so that company 15, our youth club, and many other clubs
45:55are having the Christmas. I understand that the library is having one. My colleague from
45:59Marvel is also having one. So, when you guys go up and you type in, but our club in particular
46:03is only 15th. My uncle who passed away, who played Sander for many years, we want to honor him,
46:08um, and comes out and I want to thank acting inspector Perry from Western Vision, who really
46:14gives the prompt on the police and add color and flair, because that's the highlighter,
46:19when Santa Rich, and I want to appeal to the corporate entity, please support your clubs in
46:25your area. Donation of soft drinks, ice cream, lollies, whatever. The objective is to make children
46:31smile, you know, some nice gifts. There are children come December 25th, don't have any.
46:38You know, I grew up on Nelson Street, brother, and I saw what is have and what not to have.
46:44And sometimes you see children come outside playing with the toys and gifts, and unfortunately nothing
46:49for you this year, you know, and then your parent will have to call and tell you, don't worry,
46:53next year we'll come, you'll get a gift, and Christmas is adults, you know, we could rock back
46:58and, and, you know, be humble, but children look forward to the little gifts. So we're asking,
47:04and we appeal to members of the public, if you're in Western Vision, support the youth clubs in
47:08Western Vision. You're in South, Tobago, wherever, go to the youth club leader, call them, send us some that
47:14you have in a function, how can I be of service? And I want to put in a two-plug, there are some
47:18smart men, and there are some people going around soliciting funds, claiming that they are youth club,
47:24and they're supporting youth club. No badge, no stamp, nothing. Be very careful, please. Challenge them,
47:30take the number, and report it. All right, I'll have to put you at the head of the class then.
47:36Right, we're going to take a short break, and we'll be back. Stay with us.

48:18So

48:53Here's to one more tradition shared.
48:59One more expression of gratitude.

50:27So
50:57welcome back to Beyond the Tape. I'm your host Mark Bassan, joined today by Corporal
51:06Shabody from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the St. James Youth Club. We quickly
51:11want to take you to a video here that was shot in Chaguanas by a motorist observing
51:19an incident involving another motorist and a police officer, in this case a female police officer,
51:25where she would have attempted to stop the driver in this case who continues to drive his vehicle,
51:33although the officer is warning him. And I think he's making a, it looks like an illegal
51:39U-turn there, because I know when you make a right there you're supposed to go across onto
51:43the highway. That's right. And what she does is she removes the key from the ignition
51:51and the driver walks home. Is that justified behavior? That is witty, smart, intelligent,
51:57calculated. She looked at the situation and she made a decision. It was non-confrontational. She
52:03said, okay, I seized your key. You come out now because you did not conform and follow our lawful
52:08instructions. And that officer needed to be applauded. She didn't have a male officer,
52:13probably he was within the vicinity. And I think it was smart. It didn't allow any kind of undue,
52:19you follow? Yeah. And she made a decision and she needed to be applauded for that. I wonder if it's
52:24because she was a female officer, he felt he could have gotten away with it. More than likely, yes,
52:28you have men saying, you're a woman, you can't tell me nothing. And I think she needed to be
52:33applauded. That was absolutely excellent. And it should go on every video, viral, showing police
52:39officers coming up with innovative approach in them addressing people who are lawless.
52:44You get a lot of lawful instructions, my brother. Let's quickly look at what happened around the
52:48Savannah as well. Another traffic incident here involving a vehicle on fire. It appears to be,
52:57I'm not sure what you make of the vehicle. It looks like Almera, I don't want to be presumptuous,
53:03a Nissan vehicle. But we have been seeing a lot of cars catching on fire on the
53:10roadways for one reason or the other. In some cases, we don't know why, but we are hopeful
53:16that nobody was hurt in that particular incident. Yeah, we're really asking people to check your
53:21vehicle, make sure it has water. You see any gauge going up. I mean, it's in your hustle and bustle,
53:27you have to keep checking and monitoring your vehicle and make sure it's attempted to because
53:31sometimes it's at your own detriment and sometimes innocent lives are lost as a result of that.
53:37So I want to quickly look at Lupinu earlier this morning. So it seems that a tree fell in the area
53:45and of course, would have blocked off all access in and out of that location. I know with the
53:51weather being very two-faced in the last couple of days, maybe this soil got loose and the tree
53:59it's a rather huge. What must be applauded is the community coming out afterwards and attending
54:08and that must be applauded. But even after every disaster, hurricane, whatever, the people come
54:14out, they look, they see if lives are safe, you know, they assist, they bring all the tools and
54:18that those are the pictures we just showcase. That is Trinidad, that is love, that is Tobago
54:23and that's what brings us together. I know you quickly wanted to make some special mention of
54:27some persons as well as any safety tips. Quickly, we have about a minute. Yeah, I just want to
54:32personally commend Assistant Commissioner Sugdeen. He has been an officer and a gentleman. He has
54:37supported all our initiatives. He's now in Shadow Union for a little while and by extension, I just
54:43want to salute the Secretariat. Western Division has launched a program in terms of going out to
54:49the community, educating, talking to them, monitoring, allowing them to understand the importance of
54:55safety and how to conduct being alert, being assertive for the Christmas and I'm sure all
54:59divisions are doing that too. I just want to wish the Police Youth Club organization a happy 50th
55:06anniversary from Mr. Cooper go all the way down. We just want to salute them. They are pioneers,
55:11soldiers and they're true pillars. Alright, great and that's the end of our program today but we just
55:17want to ensure that you guys stay safe on the nation's roadways. We are imploring you and we
55:23are begging you to be mindful and vigilant on the nation's roadways as we get into the weekend.
55:28Have a very safe and productive weekend as well and repeat tonight at 11.30. No rerun tomorrow.
55:35The TV6 News is up next. Stay with us.
