00:00Gulf News, which launched on September 30, 1978 in a tabloid format, has come a long

00:12way.

00:13It has gone from broadsheet to Berliner, from the ingenue on the block to the largest news

00:17brand in the UAE.

00:19And since it came into being only seven years after the formation of the United Arab Emirates,

00:24Gulf News has seen and reported the growth of the country every step of the way.

00:30As the publication turns 40, it does so with a BPA-audited paid circulation of over 93,068,

00:37a website that is trusted by its viewers for authentic information day after day after

00:42day.

00:47The United Arab Emirates was formed as the leaders of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman,

00:52Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Khawain came together.

00:55The capital of the UAE is Abu Dhabi.

00:58It's got a landscape rich in high-rises and hotels, beaches and parks, and history.

01:04But while its residents' lives are steeped in tradition, they are also committed to modernity.

01:09Salam Street in Abu Dhabi, which has been renamed Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street, has

01:14retained its colorful streak from 1987.

01:17Sleeker views come to light at Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street, which was once

01:22known as Old Airport Road.

01:25Dubai today looks very little like it did 40 years ago.

01:37In those days, the paper was put together on manual plates.

01:40There was no spell check, and woe betide the reporter who failed to deliver a story.

02:08Today Dubai is at the forefront of entertainment, even hosting an annual film festival every

02:13year that sees Hollywood greats and world premieres.

02:16It's also gone a step further in entertaining the masses thanks to the Dubai Opera, which

02:21holds world-class performances throughout the year.

02:24The Burj Al Arab changed the skyline of the city and pays owes to its cultural roots.

02:29It's designed to resemble a ship's sail and comes complete with a helipad.

02:39Sharjah is also called the nation's cultural capital, with museums and restored homes,

02:45and of course the Sharjah Fort, which dates back to the 19th century.

02:49When you start getting directions based on your location, you know you're in a prime

02:54spot.

02:55The clock tower, Wahda, have won this distinction.

03:08One of the chief things to do here is experience its sense of hospitality and community.

03:13You could head to the Ajman Fort, which is an ode to the country's rich trading and

03:17pearling past.

03:18Archaeological finds, pearl history, and weaponry are on display at this restored fort.

03:36Ras Al Khaimah, home to healing hot springs and centuries-old forts, has over the years

03:41become quite the tourist draw.

03:44And of late, it has used the phenomenal height of the UAE's tallest peak, Jabal Jais, to

03:49create an experience perfect for concerts.

03:52Sun, sand, and beachy days?

03:54Fujairah is the place to see.

03:56And while Gulf News has taken various angles to explore the city, what really draws attention

04:01is the UAE's oldest mosque, Al Badiya Mosque, which is made of mud and bricks.
