00:00They say there are wounds that take a long time to heal and leave scars.
00:15But in that end, how if the wound will heal easily with the help of a medical device from a simple aquarium pump?
00:24Let's go! Let's change the game!
00:30In small wounds like accident wounds, the patient can be placed under the so-called vacuum-assisted closure.
00:42In this treatment, vacuum pressure is used to help close the wound and stimulate tissue growth.
00:49This type of device can reach Php 200,000 to Php 300,000 in the market.
00:54That's why To The Rescue is its locally made version.
01:00This is the Aquavac, developed by Dr. Kim Hingco, a Bacolod-based orthopedic.
01:06He saw the lack of access to this type of device in the country due to the price.
01:12Because in our hospital, we have a lot of patients with motorcycles.
01:18When the pump was still in use, we didn't have that problem.
01:24So to help the patients,
01:27Dr. Kim improvised and converted an aquarium pump to simulate this.
01:32What he does is, number one, because there's a vacuum, of course, the foam collapses.
01:39The wound also shrinks a bit.
01:41So the wound shrinks more and more.
01:44We compared it to a US brand.
01:47And the study showed that it has the same effect.
01:51The device helped save the arm of a bus accident survivor.
01:56And because of the funding of DOST, it was enhanced and the digital version, the Aquavac Advance, was completed.
02:04Dear viewers, in front of us now is the most recent version of the Aquavac.
02:10So this is the pump. The pressure is indicated in front of it.
02:15And we can adjust the pressure according to the severity.
02:20This canister is at the back.
02:22Of course, it sucks the fluids of the wound, bacteria, edema.
02:28So all of that goes here.
02:31For example, you have a wound here.
02:33The first thing you will put is this foam.
02:36And then afterwards, after the foam, we will put this dressing.
02:40This is the tubing component.
02:42It will be placed in the middle of the foam.
02:44And we can proceed to turn on the pump.
02:50From Php 200,000 to Php 300,000 per unit, the Aquavac is only worth Php 50,000 per unit.
02:57It is also used in some hospitals in the country.
03:00We're still developing another one that has an installation.
03:04There is a pump antibiotic solution.
03:08There you have it, Kapuso.
03:10A huge help to make severe wound healing faster and more accessible in the country.
03:15For GMA Integrated News, I am Martin Aviar.
03:18Changing the Game!
03:20In time for the floods of bad weather,
03:24we have a new innovation tonight.
03:27It is easier to treat leptospirosis patients
03:31who are at high risk of complications.
03:33Come on, let's change the game.
03:39Because of the upcoming storm,
03:43which caused each and every flood,
03:46many Kapuso are unable to avoid flooding.
03:51This is one of the reasons why the number of hospitals is declining.
03:55And one of the cases is leptospirosis.
04:01As of October 18,
04:02the number of cases of leptospirosis in the country is almost 6,000.
04:07Of that number, 8% or more than 500 are in the weed.
04:11What if there's a clue?
04:13Who among our patients could possibly have a severe case of leptospirosis?
04:19We can save a life.
04:23That clue can be found in the so-called biomarkers or molecules in the blood of patients.
04:29Using the leptospirosis prognosticator developed by Dr. Jose Binevado Jr.
04:35of the National Institutes of Health of UP, Manila.
04:39So this leptospirosis, as soon as it floods,
04:41they multiply and when you get injured,
04:44they can get into your wound, you can get sick,
04:46and they will cause damage to our organs.
04:50In severe cases of leptospirosis,
04:52it is often the leprosy, where the death rate is 80%,
04:57as well as kidney failure.
04:59And in their examination,
05:00it turns out that there is a molecule that changes the blood of patients
05:04who have complications.
05:06Almost all the patients who died and all those who had pulmonary complications,
05:11that molecule is lower than normal.
05:14If we know that these patients will be severe in the long run,
05:21we will not let them go home.
05:23They should be kept locked up in the hospital.
05:27To predict who are the high-risk patients,
05:30the first thing the RNA will get is from their blood sample.
05:34We will use this master mix from the leptospirosis prognosticator.
05:43And then it will be placed in the QPCR machine to see the data.
05:47We monitor two molecules.
05:49If the CCFI of a patient with leptospirosis is lower,
05:54he may have lung complications.
05:57The second molecule is called alpha defensins or DEFA.
06:02If the DEFA of a patient is higher,
06:05they have a higher chance of having kidney complications.
06:09The biomarker test was also patented locally and internationally.
06:14It was also validated in two independent studies.
06:17We will teach our users to wisely decide on the treatment care of the patient.
06:25That's it, Kapuso.
06:26Another game-changing innovation
06:28that will help our medical professionals in leptospirosis care.
