00:00This video was filmed by a UN team that had rare access to the north of the Gaza Strip.
00:22It shows the once vibrant seafront after a year of Israeli bombing, now in ruins, emptied
00:28of its population.
00:30Before the war, northern Gaza had a population of 500,000 people.
00:34A year later, the UN estimates there are just 70,000.
00:39Northern Gaza was the first part of the territory that Israel bombed after Hamas's surprise
00:44attack on October 7th, 2023.
00:47Israel resumed its attacks on the north this October, ordering thousands of residents to
00:51flee the densely populated Jabalia camp.
00:55The Israeli army has been besieging the camp ever since.
01:00A collective of local journalists sent France 34 interviews with residents forced to flee
01:05the camp.
01:25The Israeli army says the evacuations in Gaza are intended for the safety of the territory's
01:42residents while military operations are underway.
01:46But the NGO Human Rights Watch says that in many cases the evacuations are intended to
01:50be permanent and amount to mass forcible transfers which are banned by the Geneva Conventions.
01:57By the end of October, Israel had destroyed or damaged nearly 70% of the buildings in
02:02northern Gaza, according to researchers in the US.
02:06The destruction is visible, entire neighborhoods flattened, here in the city of Beit Lahiya,
02:12near the border with Israel.
02:14Or in Jabalia during the Israeli offensive in October.
02:19Satellite images show the army is building a road across northern Gaza.
02:24Some analysts say it might become a new buffer zone in the Gaza Strip.
02:28In its report, Human Rights Watch documented the creation of such buffer zones across Gaza,
02:34saying the Israeli army systematically razed land and buildings along the roads they have
02:39built to enter Gaza, including the access road to the Jabalia camp.
02:43Other analysts, like Brian Carter, say the Israeli military will be under pressure to
02:47explain the level of destruction once the fighting ends.
02:52That's going to present a serious problem for the Israelis because as this war, when
02:56this war winds down and foreign journalists can go back into the Gaza Strip, there's going
03:02to be a big public relations problem that the Israelis are going to face because they
03:10will need to explain, you know, A, why this destruction took place, and B, how it's going
03:19to get repaired.
03:20The senior Israeli commander, Brigadier General Itzik Cohen, reportedly told an off-the-record
03:25press briefing on November 5th there will be, quote, no return for any residents of
03:30northern Gaza.
03:31The Israeli army said his remark was taken out of context and did not reflect the army's
03:35objectives.
03:45These civilians are caught in the crossfire between separatist militants in southeastern
03:49Iran and Iran's security forces.
03:53At the end of the day, four of the militants were dead and three members of the security
03:56forces.
04:04The separatist group is called Jaysh al-Adl, or Army of Justice.
04:08Sunni Muslims, they are fighting for the independence of the Iranian province of Sistan and Balochistan.
04:14The group is listed as a terrorist organization, not just by Iran, but by Russia, Pakistan,
04:20China and the U.S.
04:22The latest wave of attacks started on September 27th in the town of Suran, with one member
04:27of Iran's security forces killed.
04:30Five days later, the security forces responded in Dasht-e-Ari county, killing one member
04:35of Jaysh al-Adl.
04:36While neither side has published total casualty figures, the front's 24 observers has documented
04:41at least 18 clashes since late September, with at least 32 members of the Iranian security
04:47forces killed and 40 members of Jaysh al-Adl.
04:51We spoke to a resident of the province who supports Jaysh al-Adl's aims, but not their
04:55use of violence.
04:57They're hiding his name and voicing his account for security reasons.
05:00Sistan and Balochistan is home to the Baloch minority, Sunni Muslims in predominantly
05:30Shia Iran.
05:32They have long struggled with poverty and underdevelopment, and there are frequent demonstrations
05:37against the regime.
05:38We spoke to another resident of the province who says the violence is not productive.
