Hindu-Muslim unity in Leicester

The British city of Leicester saw communal tensions after an India Pakistan match. But these Hindu and Muslim residents responded with a message of unity.

00:08Our message to anyone that shows disharmony between us is clear.

01:17Our two faiths have lived harmoniously in this wonderful city for over half a century.

01:39We arrived in this city together.

01:42We faced the same challenges together.

01:45We fought off racist haters together and collectively made this city a beacon of diversity

01:53and community cohesion.

01:56That is why today we are saddened and heartbroken to see the eruption of tension and violence,

02:03physical attacks on innocent individuals and unwarranted damage to property are not part

02:09of a decent society and indeed not part of our faiths.

02:16What we have seen is not what we are about.

02:21We together call upon the immediate cessation of propagation and violence, both in thought

02:28and behaviour.

02:31We together call upon the inciters of hatred to leave our city alone.

02:37We are a strong family.

02:38We will work together to resolve whatever concern may arise.

02:43We do not need to call upon the assistance from outside of our city.

02:48Leicester has no place for foreign extremist ideology that causes division.

02:55Our message to anyone that shows disharmony between us is clear.

03:05We ask all to respect the sanctity of religious places, both mosques and mandirs alike, whether

03:12provocation with loud music, flag bearing or derogatory chants, or physical attacks

03:18against the fabric of worship.

03:21This is not acceptable nor upheld by our faiths.

03:27But as with all families, we will be having honest and uncomfortable conversations in

03:32addressing the issues, but we are confident that our faith in God and indeed faith in

03:39each other, we will come out of this even stronger.

03:44We are one family.
