Vanessa Bryant was awarded $16 million in a lawsuit over the sharing of photos from the helicopter crash that killed her husband, Kobe Bryant, and her daughter, Gianna.

00:05victims of the January 2020 helicopter crash that killed NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old

00:10daughter Gianna, and seven others. Photos taken by rescue crews at the scene showed not only the

00:15wreckage of the helicopter, but also the mutilated bodies of the crash victims. The trial exposed

00:19that some Los Angeles County deputies and firefighters released these photos to people

00:23outside the investigation, including family members and friends. The plaintiffs argued that

00:28the photos of their loved ones caused emotional distress and violated their privacy. Vanessa

00:32Bryant told jurors of her fear that they would be released on the internet. In September of 2020,

00:36the Kobe Bryant Act was signed into law in California to address invasion of privacy.

00:41The bill prohibits first responders from sharing photos of a deceased person

00:44for any purpose other than official law enforcement business.
