Online violence against women and girls - South Yorkshire Police's Assistant Chief Constable Hayley Barnett discusses Know More campaign

00:00So we know this is a growing issue, we also know that violence against women and girls is under-reported

00:05and certainly when it comes to online offending it's even more the case.

00:08So we really want to get the message out there that types of behaviours that we're seeing

00:13such as threats of violence, threats of rape, which has a horrific and profound impact on the victims

00:20which can be really lasting as well, won't be tolerated and they are criminal offences.

00:26Some people don't see them as that, so they don't feel the need to report it.

00:31So things like cyber flashing, there is cyber stalking within that as well

00:36and also seeing threats of violence online and that can be anything from

00:42threats to assault people all the way through to rape which is obviously horrific.

00:47When people report matters to the police there's often concerns that things will be taken out of

00:52their own hands and like I say this is very much about empowering women and girls so

00:57they will be very much in the driving seat when it comes to deciding what happens next.

01:01It's also about making sure we've got some support as well and we can again signpost

01:05people to different agencies and obviously make sure that they are safe online going forward.

01:11But also this is about a societal issue that we really need to start taking action to

01:17eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls and we can only do that

01:21if we understand the entirety of the problem.
