Euronews is at COP29 in Baku and asks the world's leading scientists if net zero is
00:07
possible.
00:11
Only weeks after flash floods in Valencia killed hundreds, storms hit Spain's southern
00:15
province of Malaga.
00:21
A new report by Human Rights Watch points to deliberate forced displacement in Gaza
00:25
that amounts to ethnic cleansing.
00:30
Net zero is a hot topic here at COP29 as we all try to limit global warming.
00:36
But is it actually technically possible?
00:39
Well according to the world's leading scientists, yes it is.
00:42
The IPCC has shown that not only is it possible but there are multiple ways to get to net
00:48
zero.
00:49
Of course none of them are easy, however it is still possible.
00:52
To reach net zero you have to drive down your energy use as much as possible and in
00:58
Europe that means reuse, recycle, repurpose and get planting.
01:05
Urban trees for example, already urban trees capture 7 gigatons of carbon dioxide altogether
01:10
and every year an additional 400 megatons so our cities would really benefit from much
01:17
more big trees and infrastructure.
01:19
They also bring down energy use, they also help with adaptation, with mental health,
01:24
better liveable cities, increasing property values.
01:27
Existing technology means that the buildings in those tree filled cities can be retrofitted
01:33
so that they become energy producers rather than energy consumers.
01:37
But there are many sectors such as petrochemicals, steel and cement where it's impossible to
01:42
operate without emitting CO2 into the atmosphere so they're going to need to capture that carbon.
01:47
And carbon capture technologies are proving expensive and difficult to scale so are there
01:53
any innovations that can fix it?
01:55
I believe that we can become carbon neutral in our world by renewable energies, energy
02:01
efficiency, all the solutions that exist but they are not implemented fast enough which
02:08
means that we will need most probably direct air capture because we are not doing enough
02:14
today and we will need to pay this cost of inaction by putting a lot of money into direct
02:21
air capture.
02:22
The scientists and engineers are convinced that net zero is possible and in many countries
02:26
including the EU it's a legal obligation.
02:30
However fossil fuel use is still growing and nobody believes that it's peaked so we're
02:35
going to need a huge shift in society as well as technology to get net zero on the road
02:41
to reality.
02:42
Jeremy Wilkes at COP29 in Azerbaijan for Euronews.
02:50
Storms in Spain's southern province of Malaga caused school closures and train cancellations.
02:56
Two weeks after flash floods in Valencia and other parts of the country killed more than
03:00
220 people and destroyed thousands of homes.
03:06
Streets in the area were flooded as thousands were moved from their houses as a preventative
03:10
measure.
03:12
There were no reports of any deaths.
03:16
Experts say that drought and flood cycles are increasing with climate change.
03:23
In response to the devastating floods in Spain, the European Parliament debated measures to
03:28
strengthen the EU's resilience to extreme weather events and provide support to those
03:33
impacted by the disaster.
03:36
The debate focused on enhancing the EU's crisis response, particularly in regions increasingly
03:42
vulnerable to climate-driven events.
03:51
The Israeli military is responsible for deliberate forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza,
03:57
according to a new report by Human Rights Watch.
04:01
The humanitarian group said they have evidence that Israeli authorities' conduct, which has
04:05
led to the displacement of 90 percent of Gaza's population, amounts to war crimes.
04:11
They point to a clear intent by Israeli government officials, including Netanyahu, to make the
04:16
return of displaced Palestinians to their homes impossible.
04:21
Given this evidence, including the sheer number of Palestinian civilians in Gaza driven from
04:27
their land and the manner of displacement and the attempts to make this return impossible,
04:32
The forced displacement is widespread, systematic and intentional and forms part of a state
04:37
policy and amounts to a crime against humanity.
04:41
In the areas where the military has raised, extended and cleared land for buffer zones
04:45
and security corridors, human rights watch finds these actions of the Australian authorities
04:50
amount to ethnic cleansing.
04:52
The report is being published amid an ongoing Israeli military campaign in northern Gaza
04:57
that has created a new wave of displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians.
05:02
In its report, Human Rights Watch analyzed Israeli evacuation orders and said that they
05:07
do not comply with the laws of war by failing to ensure safe passage and refuge for Palestinians.
05:20
Protests erupted in Paris on Wednesday night against a controversial gala organized by
05:25
Israel's far right.
05:27
The event, held in a secret location, intended to raise money for Israel.
05:32
It advertised guests such as the Israeli finance minister, Bezalel Smodrich, known for his
05:38
extreme positions on Gaza, who ended up cancelling his trip to Paris.
05:43
The demonstration was organized by multiple pro-Palestinian groups and the hard-left France
05:48
Unbowed Party.
05:49
It's a follow-up to the Israel Forever gala. I would rather say Horror Israel, because
05:56
we invite people who have spoken, who incite racial hatred and beyond that, who dehumanize,
06:04
that is to say, to speak concretely, that is to say, who compare Palestinians to animals.
06:12
French authorities refused to cancel the event, claiming it posed no major threat to public
06:17
order, further angering protesters and some left-wing politicians.
06:22
It's a real anger, because we have people who, once again, here, in the heat, in a golden
06:27
living room, who will raise money, who will feed the Israeli army tomorrow, who will massacre
06:31
children in Palestine. It's absolutely unacceptable.
06:33
Although the demonstration was relatively peaceful, a few stores, such as McDonald's
06:37
and Carrefour, were vandalized. Tensions are at an all-time high as the gala was coincidentally
06:43
held on the eve of a football match between Israel and France. Some are worried the game
06:49
could lead to major clashes.
07:01
A total of 4,000 police officers will be mobilized for the football game on Thursday evening
07:07
in Paris. That's one police officer for every five attendees, a highly unusual number for
07:14
such a sporting event.
07:21
A Canadian-led NATO brigade is wrapping up its first full-scale exercise in Latvia.
07:28
Operation Resolute Warrior involves 3,500 troops from 13 different countries, half of
07:34
whom have been sent by Canada. As the brigade commander emphasizes, a very important exercise
07:41
was played out to strengthen communication abilities.
07:46
We were able to speak to all of us. Having 13 countries doing that exercise, for me,
07:54
was to make sure that it was not a Canadian brigade where people were adapting to the
07:59
way we do things. We want to make sure that we do a NATO standard brigade with NATO planning
08:05
process and NATO orders.
08:09
The Atlantic Alliance is aiming to beef up its military presence in the Baltics since
08:14
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Latvia shares a nearly 300-kilometer
08:21
long border with Russia. But NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is confident U.S. President
08:28
to be Donald Trump will continue investing in the alliance.
08:34
So Russia, China, North Korea, Iran working together, the U.S. understands this, that
08:39
NATO is there not only to defend Europe and the U.S., but also to work together to make
08:45
sure that the Indo-Pacific and the transatlantic stay safe.
08:52
Exercise Resolute Warrior began on the 1st of November and comes to an end today.
09:04
Local police had to intervene the negotiations between the unions and the management of Audi
09:08
Brussels on Wednesday. Workers say their counter-proposal for the social plan was rejected, so they were
09:13
peacefully showing their discontent when they entered the meeting room, at which point the
09:18
management called for help to be escorted out of the facility. The Belgian police arrived
09:22
on the scene with batons, helmets and shields.
09:48
The social plan is in connection with the scheduled closure of the plant at the end
09:51
of February. A total of nearly 4,000 workers will be unemployed because of the closure.
09:56
Protests and negotiations have been ongoing for some time, but a final deal has not been
10:00
reached.
10:05
The South African government says it will not help an estimated 4,000 illegal miners
10:10
inside a closed mine in the country's northwest province. The miners in the mine shaft in
10:15
Stilfontein are being denied access to basic necessities such as food and water, after
10:20
police closed off the entrances used to transport their supplies underground. In the past few
10:26
weeks, over 1,000 miners have surfaced at various mines in northwest province, with
10:31
many reported to be weak, hungry and sickly after going for weeks without basic supplies.
10:36
The European Parliament debated the future of EU-US relations under the new Trump administration,
10:47
considering how to address challenges as the EU seeks stable transatlantic relations.
11:06
The US is Europe's most long-standing ally and its main security provider, with leaders
11:28
across the political spectrum agreeing dialogue is paramount to survive Trump's America
11:34
first mindset.
