00:00UK student fees for universities in England are set to rise as of next year for the first
00:06time in eight years. Undergraduate tuition fees are set to rise to £9,535. This is an
00:13increase of £285. Maintenance loans are also set to rise, as confirmed by Education Secretary
00:20Bridget Philipson, in order to help students manage the cost of living. It's also been
00:25reported that for universities, the higher fees are a cash injection to assist with their
00:30most immediate financial challenges. Now, the National Union of Students have called
00:34the tuition fee rise a sticking plaster, but added that higher maintenance loans will make
00:39a real difference to the poorest of students. MP Bridget Philipson said that the government's
00:44plan is to announce further major reform for long-term investment in the universities in
00:49the coming months. The Institute for Fiscal Studies said the tuition fees increase would
00:55spare universities a further real-terms cut to their teaching resource, but they urged
00:59the government to confirm whether fees would continue to increase following next year.
