Get, get, ow, ow!
00:04
Are you wondering why cats and dogs are being petted?
00:08
Is it very wrong or very good?
00:11
Why is it important?
00:14
Here's what you need to know.
00:19
Did you know that 64% of the Pinoy households have pets?
00:23
Where 45% have dogs only, while 17% have cats only.
00:30
For the fur parents out there,
00:33
for sure, you've heard the terms of neutering and spaying.
00:37
So, what is this?
00:39
This is a surgical procedure where a part of the sexual organ is removed
00:44
by a dog or cat so that they cannot reproduce.
00:48
Neutering involves removing the testicles of the male animal
00:52
while spaying involves removing the uterus and ovaries of the female animal.
00:57
Wait, what are the benefits of this procedure for pets?
01:02
The first benefit is the risk for sexually transmitted diseases such as TBD.
01:08
Aside from TBD, there's also pyometra,
01:12
which means that the females, dogs, or cats cannot reproduce,
01:17
and the risk of infection is reduced.
01:21
For males, the testicular cancers or tumors
01:24
or prostatitis, prostatic cancers.
01:30
In terms of behavior, one of the most helpful benefits of neutering is
01:37
if your pet is highly anxious or aggressive,
01:47
they will have a calmer perspective.
01:51
They won't roam around.
01:52
If they don't roam around,
01:55
it won't be easy for them to get communicable diseases like a vaccine.
02:00
Because most of our pets are often hit,
02:03
it's good to talk about neutering or spaying our fur babies.
02:08
Female dogs go into heat twice a year around every 6 months
02:12
with an average puppy litter of 5-6.
02:15
Female cats go into heat as often as every 2-3 weeks
02:19
with 3-6 kittens per litter with an average of 4.
02:24
Take note that the litter size depends on the size of your fur baby.
02:30
FYI, male cats and dogs do not go into heat.
02:35
Rather, they respond to female cats and dogs in heat
02:38
and their mating instincts are charged.
02:41
So it is very cutesy and very mindful
02:44
to weigh the options for your fur baby's health and reproductive habits.
02:48
Fur moms and dads have the right to decide for their pets
02:54
whether or not to go through neutering and spaying.
02:56
But did you know that there are also risks if they are not spayed?
03:00
This includes breast cancer,
03:03
uterine infection and cancer,
03:05
ovarian cancer, testicular tumors,
03:08
prostate problems, and perennial tumors and hernias.
03:11
They can also develop behavioral changes
03:14
such as increasing aggression
03:17
and leaving the house to mate.
03:20
Aside from the health benefits of spaying pets,
03:24
do you know that it can also help prevent the overpopulation of homeless animals?
03:29
According to the Philippine Animal Welfare Society or PAWS,
03:32
there are estimated 12 million stray cats and dogs in our country.
03:37
Spaying and neutering reduces pet overpopulation.
03:41
So if you want to be a responsible pet owner
03:46
who can no longer contribute to the already big problem,
03:49
we all know that there are a lot of stray cats and dogs,
03:53
and there are a lot of them that are collected and euthanized in the pound,
03:58
and there are a lot of them that die on the streets.
04:00
We will make the decision.
04:02
We have to make the decision to spay and neuter our own pets.
04:05
We cannot deny the huge risk of rabies
04:08
from stray animals.
04:12
According to the World Health Organization,
04:14
the Philippines is top 3 in the countries with the highest cases of human rabies deaths in the world.
04:20
According to the Department of Health,
04:23
the estimated cases of rabies increased by 23% this year compared to 2023.
04:29
In line with rabies cases,
04:32
we have Republic Act No. 9482 or Anti-Rabies Act of 2007
04:37
which aims to protect and promote the right health of people against rabies.
04:42
In relation to neutering and spaying,
04:45
Section 10 emphasizes the need to control dog population
04:48
through capon to reduce the number of stray dogs.
04:52
As of now, no law requires animals to be spayed,
04:56
so it is still in the discretion of fur parents whether they will do it or not.
05:01
Now that we know the facts,
05:02
let's know the procedure during the capon operation
05:07
so that you know what's going on and you don't have to worry because our pets are in good hands.
05:13
Once your pets have been spayed,
05:17
the POP labs are very important
05:20
because they will determine the risk factors.
05:23
POP labs should be read at cbc.govt.nl or pre-anesthetic panels.
05:30
Once the pets are cleared for surgery,
05:34
they need to be fasted for 8-12 hours.
05:37
They need to be put in water for at least 8-12 hours.
05:41
Then, we start the procedure for both females and males.
05:45
We clean the surgical site,
05:47
and of course, there should be no hair on the surface.
05:50
The first thing we do once the patient is spayed
05:54
is to insect both females and males.
05:56
Then, we locate the organ that needs to be removed.
06:00
For males, it's the testicles.
06:02
For females, it's the olfactory to the uterus parts.
06:07
Once located,
06:09
we surgically remove it and lay the organs ready to prevent bleeding.
06:14
Then, we just wait for it to heal from the anesthesia.
06:19
At this point, do you have a different perspective on capon?
06:23
If you're already for the capon,
06:25
what are the symptoms to watch out for
06:28
before you can say that it's the right time to do it?
06:31
If we're talking about the age,
06:33
6 months old is the earliest.
06:35
For the best time, actually,
06:37
it's also when the owners are decided.
06:40
Right? Because it's really necessary.
06:43
After the procedure,
06:45
you're there to care for your pet,
06:47
to cater for their extra needs.
06:50
Because of course,
06:51
there's the spawn port,
06:53
there's the clinic,
06:55
and there's the area for the wound
06:58
so that it can heal faster.
07:00
Aside from veterinary clinics offering capon services,
07:04
the Philippine Animal Welfare Society
07:06
is also offering free spay and neuter services
07:09
to indigent pet owners with aspens or puspins
07:12
through their Capon for All Pets program.
07:15
This capon program is reserved for financially constrained individuals in Metro Manila.
07:21
Including the unemployed,
07:23
students with limited budget,
07:25
senior citizens on pension,
07:27
and families relying on government aid.
07:30
A friendly reminder that the pet should be aged 6 months to 4 years old
07:35
and should have a RONG Indigency Certificate.
07:37
Like many other animal welfare organizations,
07:40
POS has capon programs.
07:43
We have a low-cost clinic
07:45
so if a regular pet owner can't afford the regular rates,
07:50
our clinic remains one of the lowest cost.
07:55
For us, it's P1,000 for female cats,
07:58
P700 for male cats,
08:01
P1,500 for female dogs,
08:04
and P1,000 for male dogs.
08:06
I'm talking about aspens and puspins
08:08
because there's an add-on rate for purebreds.
08:11
Here are the organizations with initiatives promoting neuter and spay services.
08:16
Philippine Animal Welfare Society or POS,
08:19
Pawsion Project,
08:21
Cairo Welfare Philippines,
08:23
Spay-Neuter-Inform Project.
08:26
Now that you know everything about neutering and spaying,
08:30
maybe this is the opportunity for you to get your beloved fur babies.
08:35
You've helped resolve overpopulation,
08:39
your pets have also fared well in terms of potential harm and risks.
08:43
Fur-peck, right?
