00:38On the banks of the Saraswati River,
00:40Rani Ki Vav was built
00:42in the 11th century AD
00:44as a memorial to a ruler.
00:48Step wells are a unique type
00:50of subterranean water resource
00:52and storage system that have been used
00:54on the Indian subcontinent
00:56since the 3rd millennium BC.
01:00They progressed from a simple pit
01:02in sandy soil to complex
01:04multi-story works of art
01:06and architecture over time.
01:08Rani Ki Vav was constructed
01:10at the pinnacle of step well
01:12construction and the Maru Gurjara
01:14architectural style, demonstrating
01:16mastery of this complex technology
01:18as well as tremendous beauty
01:20in detail and proportions.
01:26It is divided into seven levels
01:28of stairs with sculptural panels
01:30of high artistic quality.
01:32More than 500 principal sculptures
01:34and over 8000 minor sculptures
01:36combine religious, mythological
01:38and secular imagery,
01:40often referencing literary works
01:42and are designed as an inverted
01:44temple highlighting the sanctity
01:46of water.
01:56The seven-story structure
01:58has a length of 64 meters,
02:00a width of 20 meters
02:02and a depth of 28 meters.
02:06It is regarded as one of the best
02:08and most prestigious examples
02:10of great craftsmanship
02:12and architecture in the world.
02:16Maru Gurjara is the architectural
02:18style exhibited by the craftsmen.
02:20Rani Udayamati of the Chulukya
02:22dynasty built the step well
02:24in 1063 to honor her husband
02:26Vimadev.

02:32Khangara, built this step well
02:34in Patan, according to
02:36a 1304 composition by
02:38Gen. Monk Merutunga.

03:12when it was totally buried
03:14under silt.
03:16The step well has been renovated
03:18in the 1980 by the Archaeological
03:20Survey of India.
03:22Since 2014, the step well
03:24has been designated as a
03:26UNESCO World Heritage Site.
03:36The step well is made in the
03:38form of an inverted temple.
03:42It showcases superior
03:44architecture and the unique
03:46Maru Gurjara architectural style
03:48and houses sculptures similar
03:50to the Vimala Vasahi Temple
03:52in Mount Abu and Sun Temple
03:54at Modhera.
03:58The recently introduced
04:00lavender Rs. 100 note
04:02features this step well that
04:04has suddenly brought attention
04:06to this once unknown site.
04:08Also known as the Queen
04:10Step Well, Rani Ki Vav is
04:12the only step well to be declared
04:14as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
04:18It was also awarded the
04:20Cleanest Iconic Place in India
04:22at the 2016 Indian Sanitation
04:24Conference.
