00:00It's not fair. He was only filling in. Why should he give us homework?
00:05We don't know anything about werewolves. Two rolls of parchment?
00:10Did you tell Professor Snape we haven't covered them yet?
00:14Yes, but he said we were really behind. He wouldn't listen. Two rolls of parchment.
00:20Don't worry. I'll speak to Professor Snape. You don't have to do the essay.
00:25Oh, no. I've already finished it.
00:28Lures travellers into bogs.
00:31You notice the lantern dangling from his hand?
00:34Hops ahead. People follow the light? Then?
00:37Wait a moment, Harry. I'd like a word.
00:41I heard about the mat, and I'm sorry about your broomstick.
00:45Is there any chance of fixing it?
00:47No. The tree smashed it to bits.
00:51They planted the Whomping Willow the same year that I arrived at Hogwarts.
00:55People used to play a game, trying to get near enough to touch the trunk.
01:00In the end, a boy called Davy Gudgeon nearly lost an eye, and we were forbidden to go near it.
01:06No broomstick would have a chance.
01:09Did you hear about the Dementors, too?
01:13Yes, I did. I don't think any of us have seen Professor Dumbledore that angry.
01:18They have been growing restless for some time, furious at his refusal to let them inside the grounds.
01:25I suppose they were the reason you fell.
01:28Yes. Why? Why do they affect me like that?
01:32Am I just...
01:34It has nothing to do with weakness.
01:37The Dementors affect you worse than the others, because there are horrors in your past that the others don't have.
01:44Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this Earth.
01:49They infest the darkest, filthiest places.
01:52They glory in decay and despair.
01:55They drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them.
02:00Even Muggles feel their presence, though they can't see them.
02:04Get too near a Dementor, and every good feeling, every happy memory, will be sucked out of you.
02:10If it can, the Dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce you to something like itself, soulless and evil.
02:19You'll be left with nothing but the worst experiences of your life.
02:24And the worst that happened to you, Harry, is enough to make anyone fall off their broom.
02:29You have nothing to feel ashamed of.
02:33When they get near me, I can hear Voldemort murdering my mom.
02:41Why did they have to come to the match?
02:44They're getting hungry.
02:46Dumbledore won't let them into the school, so their supply of human prey has dried up.
02:51I don't think they could resist the large crowd around the Quidditch field.
02:55All that excitement, emotions running high.
02:59It was their idea of a feast.
03:02Azkaban must be terrible.
03:04The fortress is set on a tiny island way out to sea, but they don't need walls and water to keep the prisoners in.
03:11Not when they're all trapped inside their own heads, incapable of a single cheerful thought.
03:17Most of them go mad within weeks.
03:19But Sirius Black escaped from them. He got away.
03:23Yes, he...
03:25Black must have found a way to fight them.
03:28I wouldn't have believed it possible.
03:30Dementors are supposed to drain a wizard of his powers if he's left with them too long.
03:36You made that Dementor on the train back off.
03:39There are certain defenses one can use, but there was only one Dementor on the train.
03:45The more there are, the more difficult it becomes to resist.
03:50What defenses? Can you teach me?
03:53I don't pretend to be an expert at fighting Dementors, Harry.
03:57Quite the contrary.
03:59But if the Dementors come to another Quidditch match, I need to be able to fight them.
04:04Well, all right. I'll try and help.
04:07But it'll have to wait until next term, I'm afraid.
04:10I have a lot to do before the holidays.
04:13I chose a very inconvenient time to fall ill.
04:17We can do all our Christmas shopping there.
04:20Mum and Dad would really love those tooth-flossing string mints from Honeydukes.
04:25Psst! Harry, what are you doing?
04:29How come you're not going to Hogsmeade?
04:31We've come to give you a bit of festive cheer before we go.
04:34Come in here.
04:36Early Christmas present for you, Harry.
04:39What's that supposed to be?
04:41This, Harry, is the secret of our success.
04:45It's a wrench giving it to you, but we decided last night your needs greater than ours.
04:51Anyway, we know it by heart.
04:54We bequeath it to you. We don't really need it anymore.
04:58And what do I need with a bit of old parchment?
05:01A bit of old parchment? Explain, George.
05:06Well, when we were in our first year, Harry, young, carefree and innocent...
05:12Well, more innocent than we are now, we got into a spot of bother with Filch.
05:19We let off a dung bomb in the corridor, and it upset him for some reason,
05:23so he hauled us off to his office and started threatening us with the usual detention, disembowelment,
05:30and we couldn't help noticing a drawer in one of his filing cabinets marked confiscated and highly dangerous.
05:37Don't tell me.
05:39Well, what would you have done?
05:41George caused a diversion by dropping another dung bomb.
05:44I whipped the drawer open and grabbed... this.
05:48It's not as bad as it sounds, you know.
05:51We don't reckon Filch ever found out how to work it.
05:54He probably suspected what it was, though, or he wouldn't have confiscated it.
05:58And you know how to work it?
06:01Oh, yes.
06:03This little beauty's taught us more than all the teachers in this school.
06:08You're winding me up.
06:10Oh, are we?
06:12I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.
06:16Messers Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs, purveyors of aids to magical mischief-makers,
06:23are proud to present the Marauder's Map.
06:28Right into Hogsmeade.
06:30There are seven in all.
06:31Now, Filch knows about these four, but we're sure we're the only ones who know about these.
06:38Don't bother with the one behind the mirror on the fourth floor.
06:41We used it until last winter, but it's caved in, completely blocked.
06:45And we don't reckon anyone's ever used this one, because the whomping willow's planted right over the entrance.
06:51But this one here.
06:53This one leads right into the cellar of Honeydukes.
06:57We've used it loads of times.
06:59And as you might have noticed, the entrance is right outside this room,
07:03through that one-eyed old crone's hump.
07:07Messers Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs.
07:11We owe them so much.
07:14Noblemen, working tirelessly to help a new generation of lawbreakers.
07:19Right.
07:21Don't forget to wipe it after you've used it, or anyone can read it.
07:25Just tap it again and say, Mischief Managed, and it'll go blank.
07:29So, young Harry, mind you behave yourself.
07:33See you in Honeydukes.
07:35No, Harry won't want one of those.
07:38They're for vampires, I expect.
07:40How about these?
07:42Definitely not.
07:44Harry!
07:45What are you doing here?
07:47How... how did you...
07:49Wow, you've learnt to apparate.
07:52Course I haven't.
07:54How come Fred and George never gave it to me?
07:56I'm their brother.
07:57But Harry isn't going to keep it.
08:02He's going to hand it in to Professor McGonagall, aren't you, Harry?
08:05No, I'm not.
08:07Are you mad?
08:08Hand in something that good?
08:10If I hand it in, I'll have to say where I got it.
08:14Filch would know Fred and George had nicked it.
08:17But what about Sirius Black?
08:19He could be using one of the passages on that map to get into the castle.
08:23The teachers have got to know.
08:25He can't be getting in through a passage, Sly.
08:28There are seven secret tunnels on the map, right?
08:31Fred and George reckon Filch already knows about four of them.
08:34And of the other three, one of them's caved in, so no one can get through it.
08:38One of them's got the whomping willow planted over the entrance, so you can't get out of it.
08:43And the one I just came through...
08:45Well, it's really hard to see the entrance to it down in the cellar, so unless he knew it was there...
08:52What if Black did know the passage was there?
08:56By order of the Ministry of Magic,
08:59customers are reminded that until further notice,
09:01Dementors will be patrolling the streets of Hogsmeade every night after sundown.
09:06This measure has been put in place for the safety of Hogsmeade residents
09:10and will be lifted upon the recapture of Sirius Black.
09:13It is therefore advisable that you complete your shopping well before nightfall.
09:18Merry Christmas.
09:20See? I'd like to see Black try and break into Honeydukes with Dementors swarming all over the village.
09:27Anyway, Hermione, the Honeydukes' owners would hear a break-in, wouldn't they?
09:31They live over the shop.
09:33Yes, but... but...
09:35Look, Harry still shouldn't be coming into Hogsmeade.
09:38He hasn't got a signed form.
09:40If anyone finds out, he'll be in so much trouble.
09:43And it's not nightfall yet.
09:45What if Sirius Black turns up today, now?
09:48He'd have a job spotting Harry in this.
09:51Come on, Hermione, it's Christmas.
09:53Harry deserves a break.
09:55Are you going to report me?
09:57Oh, of course not.
09:59But honestly, Harry...
10:01Seen the fizzing Whizbys, Harry?
10:03And the jelly slugs? And the acid pops?
10:06Fred gave me one of those when I was seven.
10:09It burnt a hole right through my tongue.
10:11I remember Mum walloping him with her broomstick.
10:14Reckon Fred'd take a bit of cockroach cluster if I told him they were peanuts.
10:20Zonko's is up there.
10:22We could go up to the Shrieking Shack.
10:24Tell you what.
10:25Shall we go for a butterbeer in the three broomsticks?
10:28I'll get the drink, shall I?
10:30Merry Christmas.
10:32A small gilly water?
10:34Mine?
10:35Four pints of mulled mead?
10:37Ta, Rosmerta.
10:39A cherry syrup and soda with ice and umbrella?
10:43So you'll be the redcurrant rum minister.
10:46Thank you, Rosmerta, my dear.
10:48Lovely to see you again, I must say.
10:51Have one yourself, won't you?
10:53Come and join us.
10:54Well, thank you very much, minister.
10:57So, what brings you to this neck of the woods, minister?
11:02What else, my dear?
11:04But serious black.
11:06I dare say you heard what happened up at the school at Halloween.
11:10I did hear a rumour.
11:12Did you tell the whole pub, Hagrid?
11:16Do you think black's still in the area, minister?
11:19I'm sure of it.
11:21You know that the Dementors have searched the whole village twice,
11:26scared all my customers away.
11:29It's very bad for business, minister.
11:32Rosmerta, my dear, I don't like them any more than you do.
11:37Necessary precaution, unfortunate, but there you are.
11:41I've just met some of them.
11:43They're in a fury against Dumbledore.
11:45He won't let them inside the castle grounds.
11:49How are we supposed to teach with those horrors floating around?
11:53Hear, hear.
11:55All the same, they are here to protect you all from something much worse.
12:00We all know what black's capable of.
12:03Do you know, I still have trouble believing it.
12:07Of all the people to go over to the dark side,
12:11Sirius Black was the last I'd have thought.
12:14I mean, I remember him when he was a boy at Hogwarts.
12:18If you told me then what he was going to become,
12:22I'd have said you'd had too much mead.
12:25You don't know the half of it, Rosmerta.
12:28The worst he did isn't widely known.
12:31The worst? Worse than murdering all those poor people, you mean?
12:36I certainly do.
12:38I can't believe that.
12:41What could possibly be worse?
12:44You say you remember him at Hogwarts, Rosmerta.
12:47Do you remember who his best friend was?
12:50Naturally. Never saw one without the other, did you?
12:54The number of times I had them in here?
12:57Oh, they used to make me laugh.
13:00Quite the double act.
13:02Sirius Black and James Potter.
13:05Precisely.
13:06Black and Potter, ringleaders of their little gang.
13:10Both very bright, of course.
13:12Exceptionally bright, in fact.
13:14But I don't think we've ever had such a pair of troublemakers.
13:18I don't know.
13:20Fred and George Weasley could give them a run for their money.
13:24You'd have thought Black and Potter were brothers.
13:26Inseparable.
13:28Of course they were.
13:30Potter trusted Black beyond all his other friends.
13:33Nothing changed when they left school.
13:36Black was best man when James married Lily.
13:39Then they named him Godfather to Harry.
13:42Harry has no idea, of course.
13:44You can imagine how the idea would torment him.
13:48Because Black turned out to be in league with You-Know-Who?
13:53Worse even than that, my dear.
13:56Not many people are aware that the Potters knew You-Know-Who was after them.
14:01Dumbledore, who was of course working tirelessly against You-Know-Who,
14:06had a number of useful spies.
14:09One of them tipped him off.
14:11And he alerted James and Lily at once.
14:14He advised them to go into hiding.
14:16Well, of course, You-Know-Who wasn't an easy person to hide from.
14:21Dumbledore told them that their best chance was the Fidelius charm.
14:27How does that work?
14:29An immensely complex spell
14:32involving the magical concealment of a secret inside a single living soul.
14:39The information is hidden inside the chosen person or secret keeper.
14:46And is henceforth impossible to find.
14:49Unless, of course, the secret keeper chooses to divulge it.
14:54As long as the secret keeper refused to speak,
14:58You-Know-Who could search the village where Lily and James were staying for years
15:04and never find them.
15:06Not even if he had his nose pressed against their sitting room window.
15:11So Black was the Potters' secret keeper.
15:15Naturally, James Potter told Dumbledore that Black would die rather than tell where they were.
15:22That Black was planning to go into hiding himself.
15:26And yet, Dumbledore remained worried.
15:29I remember him offering to be the Potters' secret keeper himself.
15:34He suspected Black.
15:36He was sure that somebody close to the Potters had been keeping You-Know-Who informed of their movements.
15:43Indeed, he had suspected for some time that someone on our side had turned traitor
15:49and was passing a lot of information to You-Know-Who.
15:54But James Potter insisted on using Black.
15:58He did.
15:59And then, barely a week after the Fidelius Charm had been performed,
16:04Black betrayed them.
16:06He did indeed.
16:07Black was tired of his double-agent role.
16:10He was ready to declare his support openly for You-Know-Who.
16:14And he seemed to have planned this for the moment of the Potters' death.
16:18But as we all know, You-Know-Who met his downfall in Little Harry Potter.
16:24Powers gone, horribly weakened, he fled.
16:27And this left Black in a very nasty position indeed.
16:31His master had fallen at the very moment when he, Black, had shown his true colors as a traitor.
16:38He had no choice but to run for it.
16:41Filthy, stinking turncoat!
16:44I met him!
16:46I must have been the last to see him before he killed all them people.
16:50It was me what rescued Harry from Lily and James' house after they was killed.
16:56Just got him out of the ruins, poor little thing,
16:59with a great slash across his forehead and his parents dead.
17:04And Sirius Black turns up on that flying motorbike he used to ride.
17:09Never occurred to me what he was doing there.
17:12I didn't know he'd been Lily and James' secret keeper.
17:16Thought he'd just heard the news of You-Know-Who's attack and come to see what he could do.
17:22White and shaking he was, and you know what I did.
17:26I comforted the murdering traitor.
17:30Hagrid, please, keep your voice down.
17:34How was I to know he wasn't upset about Lily and James?
17:37It was You-Know-Who he cared about.
17:40And then he says,
17:42Give Harry to me, Hagrid.
17:44I'm his godfather. I'll look after him.
17:48Ah, but I'd had me orders from Dumbledore and I told Black no.
17:53Dumbledore said Harry was to go to his aunt and uncle.
17:57Black argued, but in the end he gave in.
18:00Told me to take his motorbike to get Harry there.
18:04I won't need it anymore, he says.
18:07I should have known there was something fishy going on there.
18:10He loved that motorbike.
18:12What was he giving it to me for?
18:15Why wouldn't he need it anymore?
18:17The fact was, it was too easy to trace.
18:20Dumbledore knew he'd been the Potter's secret keeper.
18:24Black knew he was going to have to run for it that night.
18:27Knew it was a matter of hours before the Ministry was after him.
18:31But what if I'd given Harry to him, eh?
18:35I bet he'd have pitched him off the bike halfway out to sea.
18:39His best friend's son.
18:42But when a wizard goes over to the dark side,
18:45there's nothing and no one that matters to him anymore.
18:50But he didn't manage to disappear, did he?
18:54The Ministry of Magic caught up with him next day.
18:58Alas, if only we had.
19:01It was not we who found him.
19:04It was little Peter Pettigrew, another of the Potter's friends.
19:08Maddened by grief, no doubt,
19:10and knowing that Black had been the Potter's secret keeper,
19:13he went after Black himself.
19:16Pettigrew, that fat little boy who was always tagging around after them at Hogwarts?
19:22Hero-worshipped Black and Potter,
19:25never quite in their league, talent-wise.
19:28I was often rather sharp with him.
19:30You can imagine how I regret that now.
19:34There, now, Minerva.
19:36Pettigrew died a hero's death.
19:39Eyewitnesses, Muggles, of course,
19:41we wipe their memories later,
19:43told us how Pettigrew cornered Black.
19:46They say he was sobbing,
19:47Lily and James, Sirius, how could you?
19:51And then he went for his wand.
19:53Well, of course, Black was quicker.
19:55Blew Pettigrew to smithereens.
19:59Stupid boy, foolish boy.
20:01He was always hopeless at dueling.
20:03Should have left it to the Ministry.
20:06I tell you, if I'd got to Black before little Pettigrew did,
20:10I wouldn't have messed around with wands.
20:13I'd have ripped him limb from limb.
20:16You don't know what you're talking about, Hagrid.
20:19Nobody but trained hit wizards from the magical law enforcement squad
20:24would have stood a chance against Black once he was cornered.
20:27I was junior minister in the Department of Magical Catastrophes at the time,
20:32and I was one of the first on the scene after Black murdered all those people.
20:36I... I will never forget it.
20:40I still dream about it sometimes.
20:42A crater in the middle of the street,
20:45so deep it had cracked the sewer below.
20:48Bodies everywhere, Muggles screaming,
20:51and Black standing there laughing
20:54with what was left of Pettigrew in front of him.
20:57A heap of bloodstained robes,
21:00and a few... a few fragments.
21:04Well, there you have it, Rosmerta.
21:08Black was taken away by twenty members of the magical law enforcement squad,
21:13and Pettigrew received the Order of Merlin, first class,
21:17which I think was some comfort to his poor mother.
21:21Black's been in Azkaban ever since.
21:24Is it true he's mad, minister?
21:28I wish I could say that he was.
21:31I certainly believe his master's defeat unhinged him for a while.
21:36The murder of Pettigrew and all those Muggles
21:39was the action of a cornered and desperate man,
21:42cruel, pointless.
21:44Yet, I met Black on my last inspection of Azkaban.
21:49You know, most of the prisoners in there sit,
21:52muttering to themselves in the dark.
21:54There's no sense in them.
21:56But I was shocked at how normal Black seemed.
22:00He spoke quite rationally to me.
22:03It was unnerving.
22:04You'd have thought he was merely bored.
22:06Asked if I'd finished with my newspaper.
22:09Cool as you please, said he missed doing the crossword.
22:13Yes, I was astounded at how little effect
22:16the Dementors seemed to be having on him.
22:19And he was one of the most heavily guarded in the place, you know.
22:23Dementors outside his door, day and night.
22:27But what do you think he's broken out to do?
22:31Good gracious, minister, he isn't trying to rejoin
22:34you-know-who, is he?
22:37I dare say that is his eventual plan.
22:42But we hope to catch Black long before that.
22:45I must say, you-know-who, alone and friendless is one thing,
22:49but give him back his most devoted servant,
22:52and I shudder to think how quickly he'll rise again.
22:56You know, Cornelius, if you're dining with the headmaster,
23:00we'd better head back up to the castle.
23:03Hurry!
