00:00John Mitchell was born in Dungevan in 1815.

00:05We know from the political and public and even the religious activity of John Mitchell Senior

00:11that he had a huge influence on John Mitchell's life.

00:13There would have been some expectation for John Mitchell to follow in his father's footsteps

00:16and become a religious minister.

00:18However, he thought he himself had no vocation for it.

00:21So after John Mitchell had rejected the idea that he might become a religious minister,

00:26he then went and took up a position with members of his mother's family in Derry

00:31to work as a banking clerk and to train in that profession.

00:34However, he found this to be very boring and full of drudgery.

00:40So eventually he turned towards the law in Trinity College Dublin,

00:42which was a fairly new thing for a Presbyterian to do at that time

00:45because there were still restrictions that existed in terms of religious instruction at Trinity.
