00:25Tofu, it is not nice to leave your food like that.

00:29You should be thankful to your food and eat it respectfully.

00:48This is a very old story.

00:50It is from the year 1620

00:54when a group of pilgrims came from Europe

00:57in a ship called the Mayflower

01:01to the east coast of United States.

01:10We have reached this new land and we shall make it our home now.

01:15Let us call it Plymouth.

01:21Yes, and this big rock by which Plymouth is recognised

01:26will be called the Plymouth Rock.

01:30We shall make a settlement here.

01:40And so the pilgrims got busy trying to make a settlement in their new home.

01:48But they had arrived in the peak of winter with little resources and no food.

01:54Oh! This is such a difficult winter.

01:57We have almost no food.

02:00The men go and catch whatever fish they can find in the freezing lakes

02:06but it is not always enough.

02:08Yes, and a sickness has taken over our people.

02:14We have lost so many strong men and women already.

02:18It is very difficult without proper food and supplies to take care of them.

02:23Yes, look at what happened to our brother James Chilton and his wife.

02:31They've both died leaving behind little Mary Chilton.

02:39Poor Mary, she's only 13 years old.

02:43She's been living in the mountains for a long time now.

02:46But without her mother and father to take care of her

02:50we will have to make sure she is safe.

02:54And so Mary was taken under the care of all other pilgrims.

03:06But it was a hard sickness and people died from extreme cold

03:11lack of food and the sickness.

03:14This meant Mary had to work hard.

03:18Many of the older women amongst the pilgrims had died.

03:26And the remaining work had to be shared by everyone.

03:35Mary took care of cooking and the cattle.

03:39Mary took care of cooking and laundry for the men and boys

03:44whose wives or mothers had died.

04:01Then one day in March

04:04two strangers called Samoset and Squanto

04:09visited the settlement.

04:13They were native Indians who lived on the land.

04:19Hello settlers, welcome to your new home.

04:23Thank you. Who are you?

04:25I am Samoset.

04:27I am the leader of the Abenaki people.

04:30I am the leader of the Abenaki people.

04:34And this is Squanto from the Wampanoag tribe.

04:39Hello Samoset and Squanto.

04:42How is it that you speak such good English?

04:46I have had experience with other settlers who know English.

04:51We see that we are having trouble with food.

04:55Squanto here can teach you how to grow food on this soil.

05:01And so the pilgrims made new friends

05:04and learnt how to grow food in their new home.

05:10They learnt that using fish as fertilizers

05:14will help their crops grow better.

05:18With the help of Squanto and the other people of his tribe

05:24the pilgrims grew a healthy crop of beans

05:29pumpkins

05:31and corns.

05:35To celebrate the harvest, the pilgrims invited

05:40King Massasoit of the Wampanoag tribe to the feast.

05:51King Massasoit's men helped the settlers hunt for the feast.

05:58And large feast of corn

06:01roasted meat

06:04pie, fruits was laid.

06:08The pilgrims dedicated this day to getting together with friends and family

06:15and thanking God for the abundance of good food

06:24and loving people in our lives.

06:29I get it now, Tia.

06:31We should be thankful for the abundance of food we have.

06:35I shall respectfully eat whatever is served to me.

07:05We are deciding the theme for this year's Halloween party

07:09and there were so many ideas going about.

07:12It was a lot of fun.

07:22It was so nice of someone to invent a day

07:26for wearing costumes and collecting treats.

07:31Is that why you think we celebrate Halloween?

07:35You mean to say, that's not why we celebrate Halloween?

07:41Then why do we celebrate it?

07:46We celebrate Halloween because it is Halloween.

07:49Why do we celebrate it?

07:52There is a lot more to Halloween than just the scary stories and trick-or-treating.

07:59Let me tell you a bit of history behind Halloween's day.

08:19lived in regions that are now Ireland, Britain and Northern France.

08:25This was long, long back, even before Jesus Christ.

08:32The Celts had a tradition of remembering those who had died

08:38and keeping the evil spirits peaceful.

08:41They did this every year on 31st October and it was called Samhain.

08:49But their practices were opposed to the Christian way.

08:54Hence, nearly 700 years after Christ,

08:58the head of the Catholic Church moved an important Christian day,

09:04the All Saints' Day, to 1st November.

09:09He thought everyone would forget about Samhain.

09:15All Saints' Day?

09:16What is that?

09:18It is a Christian festival in honour of all the saints in heaven.

09:24Earlier, it was celebrated on 1st of May.

09:29Did it work, the shifting of the festival?

09:34Well, no.

09:36It didn't work.

09:38People didn't forget about Samhain.

09:41Though it didn't spread as fast as it used to earlier.

09:46But, Tia, how did Halloween come about?

09:50Since November 1st was the day of celebrating the Holy Spirits,

09:56the evening before that became the Holy Evening or All Hallow Even.

10:05Hallow is the old word for Holy

10:10and Even is the old word for Holy.

10:15Soon, All Hallow Even became Halloween.

10:21So, it has nothing to do with dressing up?

10:26It does, Tofu.

10:28In fact, dressing up as spirits and ghosts became a part

10:33of the All Saints' Day celebration because people who celebrated Samhain

10:39believed that wearing scary costumes would scare away the evil spirits

10:45and keep them away.

10:48Just like the pumpkin you love to carve every Halloween.

10:54Oh no!

10:55No!

10:56The Jack of Lantern too!

11:05Yes, Tofu.

11:07People carve the pumpkin and keep it outside their homes

11:12to ward off the evil spirits.

11:18I never knew Halloween had such a different meaning.
