Serbian authorities clear illegal immigrant camp on Hungary border

Migration pressure along Hungary's southern border may have decreased, as locals on the Serbian side of the border say they have not seen a single refugee for months.

00:00For a year, Serbian authorities have been systematically evacuating the areas around

00:07the northern border with Hungary, collecting migrants and transporting them to camps in

00:12the Serbian cities of Kikinda and Presevo.

00:16Hundreds of illegal immigrants used to live in the barns of the Karas farm along the border

00:20fence near the town of Horgos, leaving at night to get through the barbed wire fences.

00:26But today, discarded energy drink cans and animal remains are the only signs that this

00:30place was once full of life.

00:33The roof has collapsed, the nylon sheeting protecting the windows has been ripped off

00:36and you almost can't see the buildings through the weeds.

00:40Some of the locals, like Marta, are happy about the authorities' action.

00:44She says the area has become much safer.

01:22The last time Euronews was there, almost everything was closed and people were hardly seen in

01:27public spaces, but now the shops are open and children are playing in the streets.
