20 September - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00It's wet and it's windy at the moment. The autumnal feel is going to continue
00:05through the next few days for many of us, all because of an area of low pressure
00:09just to the northwest of the UK. Tightly packed isobars indicating that it's so
00:14blustery, so windy at the moment and there is a cold front lying across us
00:18too. If we take a look at the jet stream you can see it's running actively across
00:22the UK but it's important to note the direction it takes. As we go through
00:26Wednesday into Thursday it goes to more of a northerly direction. As a result it's
00:30going to cause that front to stall somewhat and wave and that's why the
00:33rain doesn't go anywhere particularly quickly but it will clear away as we go
00:37towards the end of the week. Still under the influence of low pressure though so
00:40staying quite showery for many of us before then a ridge of high pressure
00:44starts to build in by the end of Friday. I'll have more on that at the end. Back
00:48to the here and now and you can see that front across parts of the southeast
00:51bringing some heavy bursts of rain as we go through Wednesday afternoon. It's also
00:56going to be blustery, some strong gusty winds in association with this. Elsewhere
01:00and there will be something a bit brighter for many places, some sunny
01:03skies but also plenty of showers across parts of Western Scotland. Those showers
01:07could be quite persistent or even merge into longer spells of rain and here it
01:12is going to be very windy gusts of 70 to 75 miles per hour possible. Temperatures
01:18well they're relatively academic due to the unsettled weather although we are
01:21going to see highs of around 20-21 Celsius in the southeast. When you
01:25factor in the wind the rain it's not going to feel anywhere near as warm as
01:28that and temperatures a little bit lower further north and west. Through the end
01:32of the day we are going to see some further heavy rain affecting parts of
01:36the southeast could cause some problems as we go through evening rush hour and
01:39totals building up perhaps 30 to 40 millimeters in just a few hours here but
01:44that rain does eventually clear through as we go into Thursday morning. Some
01:47clearer skies following in behind, a clearer night than it has been recently
01:51although still some showers particularly western parts of England,
01:54Wales, perhaps western parts of Northern Ireland and across many parts of
01:58Scotland. It's going to be quite cloudy with outbreaks of rain which could still
02:02be heavy at times and still some strong winds here as well. Because of the clearer
02:05skies temperatures are going to dip a little bit lower than they have done
02:08recently. Many towns and cities holding up just about in double figures but more
02:12rural and sheltered spots likely to fall a bit chillier than that. So that rain in
02:17the southeast quickly clears away first thing on Thursday morning and then it's
02:21a sunnier picture for many on Thursday. A bit more sunshine than we've seen
02:25through recent days except across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Here it
02:29is going to be quite cloudy still and there'll be outbreaks of showery rain
02:33which will still be heavy and blustery still with the risk of some hail and
02:37thunder mixed in too. Across England and Wales into the afternoon yes there'll be
02:41some sunny spells but also a scattering of showers. They'll be fairly hit or miss
02:45you may not catch any but if you do there's the potential that they could be
02:48heavy and there could be some hail and thunder mixed in as well. Temperatures on
02:52paper are down a degree or two compared to Wednesday for many but with a bit
02:56more sunshine around and slightly lighter winds generally if anything it
03:00may feel a little warmer. Looking at the bigger picture as we go through into
03:04Friday and as I mentioned before staying showery because of low pressure not too
03:08far away but then it's that ridge of high pressure I mentioned earlier
03:11building as we go through Friday night into Saturday. What that means is the
03:15weather is likely to quieten down for a short period of time so Friday night
03:19into Saturday could be largely clear but that does mean it's likely to turn a bit
03:24chilly. Saturday then gets off to a chilly but fine start before then our
03:28attention turns to another area of low pressure. It's kind of way out in the
03:32Atlantic but because it is the remnants of what was Hurricane Nigel it is going
03:37to bring some wet and windy weather as we go through the latter part of the
03:40weekend. So what that means after a quieter start to the weekend with
03:44perhaps a bit of a chilly but bright start on Saturday we are going to see
03:48the wind and rain returning as we go into Sunday. Aiden's going to have more
03:52information on that on the 10-day trend worth checking that out on our YouTube
03:55channel otherwise you can keep up to date with the forecast including all our
03:59warnings across our social media. Bye bye.
