00:0010 Most Beautiful Snakes In The World.
00:09Number 10.
00:10Asian Vine Snake.
00:11This snake has an extraordinary geometric pattern to its scales.
00:16This pattern is highlighted when the snake feels threatened and expands its body, revealing
00:22the black and white between the green scales.
00:25When relaxed, the snake has what looks like a very slender, nearly all-green body.
00:31This isn't its only defense.
00:34According to Reptiles magazine, when vine snakes sense danger, they will remain motionless.
00:40But if there is a breeze, they will sway back and forth like the foliage, to add to their
00:45camouflage.
00:47At other times, for reasons yet unclear if there is a threat, they will remain motionless
00:52with their tongue extended for minutes at a time.
00:57Number 9.
00:58Blue Racer Snake.
01:00This beauty is a pretty rare photograph of a blue racer snake.
01:04I say rare because it's not often you get such a brilliant blue reflecting from the
01:10scales, as often they seem more gray in color.
01:14The blue racer's formal name is Colubr constrictor, but despite this, they normally simply pin
01:21their prey to the ground and swallow them alive.
01:24They are known mostly east of the Rockies, but have been seen as far south as Mexico.
01:30Number 8.
01:31Eastern Coral Snake.
01:32Microrus fulvius is one of the most beautiful of all snakes.
01:37Unfortunately, it is also very venomous, as are all coral snakes.
01:43On the good side, there are only about 15-20 recorded bites a year, but on the bad side,
01:49they are deadly, and soon there will be no more anti-venom for it.
01:54Pfizer has said that with such low demand, it is not worth the cost and research spent
01:59on it, and current stock is due to expire at the end of this year.
02:03The snakes are forest animals living in leaf litter and brush.
02:07They flee before biting, but if you do get bitten, it is imperative you go to a doctor.
02:13Respiratory failure occurs within hours.
02:16Number 7.
02:18Green Tree Python.
02:19The green tree python is known for being green, hence the name, but that isn't the only color
02:25that this species might be.
02:26Juvenile green tree pythons may be bright yellow, vibrant red, or even a very dark brown.
02:33While gorgeous in its adult coloration, the species is also stunning when it's young and
02:39going through color changes.
02:41The individual shown here is in the yellow phase, with brown spots that make it look
02:46a bit like a ripening banana.
02:48As they mature, the pythons will usually change color to a variation of green or blue, however,
02:55some green tree pythons will keep that yellow coloration for their lives.
03:00Number 6.
03:02Iridescent Shieldtail.
03:03The only reason this lovely is not in the top three is that it is hard to see exactly
03:09how beautiful she is from this photograph, but she is actually even more gorgeous than
03:15she appears.
03:16She has to be one of the most beautiful snakes in the world.
03:20The iridescent shieldtail, Melanophidium bilineatum, is not well known.
03:26Only three specimens are thought to have ever been caught, and little is known of how it
03:30behaves in the wild.
03:32Recently, some more have been seen, but all that can be said for certain is that it's
03:37beautiful and rare.
03:39Number 5.
03:41Red-headed Krait.
03:42The red-headed krait is a highly venomous snake which inhibits forested hills, lower
03:47areas below 400 meters of elevation.
03:50It is mostly found in the southern part of Thailand.
03:53The red-headed krait grows up to 6.9 feet.
03:56The beauty of this snake is personified in the form of its bright orange-red head with
04:02pale body and short reddish tail.
04:06Number 4.
04:07Formosan odd-scaled snake.
04:10Another snake species that shimmers with rainbow iridescence is the Formosan odd-scaled snake.
04:17This is one of several species of odd-scaled snake.
