Typhoon Krathon Makes Direct Hit on Taiwan's Third-Largest City

Typhoon Krathon has made a direct hit on Kaohsiung—bringing winds of more than 200 kph that knocked down trees and signposts and dumping heavy rain that flooded areas of the city.

00:00Here at a hotel on the harbour front in Kaohsiung I did want to give you this update from the

00:05balcony but just before we came on air the wind and the rain really picked up. Really high winds

00:12bringing bits of trees, bits of buildings, bits of signage blowing across in this direction.

00:19That's because we are now in the eye wall of this storm. That's where the most intense weather is,

00:24the strongest winds, the strongest rain. As you mentioned there's been gusts of more than 200

00:30kilometres per hour. Here to put that in perspective that's the speed of a high

00:34speed rail train and across the city we've been seeing widespread damage. There's lots of trees

00:40down, traffic lights down, one man's been injured by an electricity cable that's been disrupted.

00:46The city's mayor has been warning everyone to stay indoors. We've received a number of

00:51notifications on our phones warning of the power of these destructive winds and that the city's

00:56evacuation centres are all now open if people need to seek refuge. Here's what the city's mayor said.

01:02This typhoon has been keeping people guessing over the last few days. It's changed direction,

01:23it's changed speed and it's a lot less powerful than it was expecting to be when it made landfall

01:30but it's still going to be in this position for another couple of hours. Weather like this hitting

01:34this city over the course of the afternoon so it's still going to be a little while before this city

01:40can come outside and truly assess the damage.
