It is with immense pleasure and pride, and no little emotion I must admit,
00:08
that I welcome all of you here today on this joyful occasion
00:13
and I am humbly indebted to all of you for having joined us to celebrate CERN's 70th anniversary.
00:23
Together, we are going to retrace the extraordinary history of this extraordinary organization
00:30
and reflect on its future.
00:53
And it is much more than that. As we will see, CERN is a value system.
01:23
We are committed to promoting the scientific excellence of the continent after the war
01:27
and to promoting the peaceful collaboration between the countries and peoples of Europe.
01:34
Indeed, our founders understood that the renaissance of Europe after the war
01:43
also required substantial investments in fundamental research
01:49
and the renaissance is a glue that can solidify the countries and peoples of a fractured continent.
01:58
Today, CERN is a truly global laboratory with 24 Member States, twice as many as in 1954,
02:06
10 Associated Member States, 4 observers and many partners from all over the world
02:13
and a community of more than 17,000 people across more than 110 nationalities.
02:20
An incredible melting pot of languages, cultures, traditions.
02:25
For those of us who work here or have worked here,
02:30
this rich and enriching diversity has become a normal part of our daily life.
02:38
But in a world where conflicts between countries, religions and cultures sadly persist,
02:46
this is a truly precious gift which cannot be taken for granted.
02:52
CERN's primary mission is research in particle physics.
02:57
Particle physics underpins our understanding of the universe
03:02
and how it has evolved from the initial Big Bang some 13.8 billion years ago up until today.
03:09
It also underpins our understanding of the building blocks that make up the stars,
03:14
the galaxies, the planets, life on Earth as we know it.
03:19
Discoveries, measurements, observations made at CERN over the decades
03:25
have made immense contributions to our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature
03:31
and the structure and evolution of the universe.
03:34
At the Large Hadron Collider, our flagship project, which actually runs physically beneath our feet,
03:41
every day we are able to reproduce the conditions of the primordial universe
03:49
as they were a millionth of a millionth of a second after the Big Bang.
03:55
Yet many open crucial questions remain, as we shall see.
03:59
For instance, 95% of the universe is dark to us,
04:03
is made of forms of matter and energy that we cannot see or understand.
04:08
And CERN is currently performing a feasibility study for its possible next facility,
04:13
the so-called Future Circular Collider,
04:16
which, on the timescale of the mid-2040s,
04:19
may become the most extraordinary instrument humanity has ever built
04:24
to understand and study the fundamental laws of the universe
04:29
and address many of the open questions.
04:33
CERN is also an engine of innovation,
04:36
because our very ambitious scientific objectives require extremely complex and sophisticated instruments
04:45
and the development of new technologies in various fields
04:50
– superconducting materials, cryogenics, vacuum, electronics, robotics,
04:55
calculations and data transmission on a planetary scale,
04:59
artificial intelligence, quantum computing.
05:03
These technologies find application in numerous areas of society,
05:08
and many of them have had a profound impact on our lives,
05:13
from the World Wide Web to accelerators for treating cancer,
05:17
the PET scanner and other medical imaging devices,
05:21
superconducting magnets for medical and nuclear fusion energy applications.
05:28
Training is another crucial mission of CERN.
05:32
At all times, 4,500 young men and women are trained here,
05:36
including physicists, engineers and technicians,
05:39
representing a wide range of skills.
05:43
Most of these young people then pursue careers outside particle physics,
05:49
in companies, in other fields of research or in public organizations.
05:54
So CERN provides society with a continuous flow of young talents
05:59
trained in STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and mathematics –
06:04
in a laboratory of scientific excellence and in a truly international environment.
06:11
I am one of the tens of thousands of young people who were trained here.
06:17
I arrived at CERN in 1994.
06:23
As a young postdoctoral student,
06:26
CERN was not only a beautiful school of physics, but also a great school of life.
06:32
CERN founders will be so proud to see what CERN has accomplished
06:38
over seven decades of its life.
06:42
And the aspiration and the values that motivated those founders
06:46
are still firmly anchored in our organization today.
06:50
They include the pursuit of scientific knowledge and technological innovation
06:54
to the benefit of society, training and education,
06:57
collaboration across borders, diversity, inclusion
07:02
and the great dose of boldness and determination
07:06
to pursue paths that border on the impossible.
07:10
In conclusion, I would like to thank the Member States of CERN
07:23
and all our partners around the world, as well as the CERN community.
07:28
I would like to pay tribute to all the people who have worked here over the years
07:33
and to all those who have supported our organization in one way or another
07:38
to make CERN such an exceptional place.
07:42
And I would particularly like to call on you, heads of state, governments,
07:46
international organizations, ministers, other authorities,
07:50
and in fact all of you who are here today,
07:52
please, please help us to ensure that CERN has a brilliant future.
07:57
Places like CERN give us hope for a better world.
08:00
Places like CERN show what humanity can achieve
08:03
when we set aside our dispute and we focus on the common good.
