00:04Venezuela's presidential election in July caused controversy over Maduro's re-election

00:09due to the lack of transparent and public voting results.

00:12This also exacerbated the political turmoil and economic crisis in the country,

00:15and caused a large-scale out-of-town movement.

00:19Some people would rather cross the Darién Gap,

00:21which is said to be the most dangerous immigration route in the world,

00:24than escape Venezuela and sneak into the United States.

00:27According to reports, the Darién Gap is an unopened area

00:31on the border between Colombia and Panama.

00:34It is very dangerous due to the swamps and forests.

00:38Long-distance truckers not only have to endure bad weather,

00:41but may also be robbed, murdered and starved.

00:45Last year, more than 500,000 refugees crossed the Darién Gap to the U.S. border,

00:50of which 60% were Venezuelans.

00:53According to the Panama Immigration Bureau,

00:5575% of the refugees who crossed the Darién Gap in recent months

00:59were Venezuelans.

01:02This is higher than last year and the first few months of this year.

01:09A group of Venezuelan refugees

01:12are sailing on the Darién Gap between Colombia and Panama.

01:16They risk crossing the swamps and forests

01:18to go to the U.S. border

01:20and sneak into the U.S. to start a new life.

01:23This large-scale refugee wave is due to the fact that

01:26Venezuelans are proud of Maduro's victory in the presidential election.

01:30I left my country after the elections.

01:33After the elections, because things got really bad.

01:36We were waiting for the elections.

01:38If Maduro had left,

01:40we would have stayed in Venezuela.

01:43But as I see, nothing happened.

01:46We decided to leave the country.

01:49After a few hours of waiting,

01:51when the refugees got off the ship,

01:53the Panama Border Service staff

01:55would go up to them and ask their nationality,

01:57arrange for them to stay in a temporary immigration center

02:00sponsored by the International Organization,

02:02and provide them with accommodation, food, medical care, and sanitation.

02:05However, this refugee camp is just

02:07a long-term turnaround for these Venezuelans.

02:10They still have to travel thousands of kilometers

02:13to cross the other five countries

02:15to reach the U.S. border.
