00:14There you are you silly little guy. Please come over here and help me go through some

00:18math questions.

00:23Here is the first problem we have. Sam has 4 hats and Josh has 8 hats. How many do they

00:31have all together?

00:34To solve this problem we can show how many hats Sam and Josh have. I happen to have the

00:39hats here but you guys can draw hats on a piece of paper to answer questions like this.

00:45Sam has 4 hats, 1, 2, 3, 4. Josh has 8 hats, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. The question is asking

00:59how many we have all together. All together means putting the groups of items together.

01:05We also call this adding. We are adding Sam's 4 hats with Josh's 8 hats to find out how

01:12many we have all together. We are going to use a strategy called counting on which means

01:18we will start with one of the groups and count up from there to count all the hats. Let's

01:24start with the group of 8 and count on. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. There are 12 hats all together.

01:42Here is another problem. Henry has 4 fewer cats than John. John has 9 cats. How many

01:50cats does Henry have?

01:53In the problem we don't know how many cats Henry has and we need to find that out. We

01:58know that John has 9 cats and Henry has 4 fewer cats than John. The word fewer means

02:04a smaller number. Having the word fewer in the problem helps us know we will need to

02:09subtract to get our answer.

02:13Here are 9 cats which represent how many John has. Henry has 4 fewer so we will cross 4

02:20of them out.

02:25Now we can count the remaining cats. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The answer is 5. Henry has 5 cats.

02:41Here is another problem. Sam has 3 more pumpkins than Jim. Jim has 6 pumpkins. How many pumpkins

02:48does Sam have?

02:51We know Jim has 6 pumpkins as you see here but we don't know how many pumpkins Sam has.

02:56The question says Sam has 3 more so we are going to add 3 more pumpkins.

03:04Now we can count on from Jim's pumpkins. Jim had 6 and we count on from 6. 7, 8, 9. Sam

03:12has 9 pumpkins which is 3 more than Jim does. Great job again! You guys are getting really

03:19good at this. Let's clear the board and do one last problem.

03:25The problem says Cindy has 7 cakes. Susie has 9. How many more cakes does Susie have

03:32than Cindy?

03:35This is similar to problems we just went over. In this problem we are going to be using subtraction

03:40to find out how many more cakes Susie has than Cindy. Let's start by drawing the 9

03:46cakes Susie has.

03:50To find out how much more we are going to cross out the 7 cakes that Cindy has to show

03:54us how many are left.

03:561, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. We have crossed out 7 cakes. How many are left?
