An estimated 700 Lebanese people have been killed in only a week as fighting between
00:06
Israel and Hezbollah escalates.
00:15
Nearly 700 people have been killed in Lebanon this week as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah
00:20
escalates according to the Lebanese health ministry.
00:25
Israel has dramatically escalated strikes in that time, saying it is targeting Hezbollah's
00:30
military capacities and senior Hezbollah commanders.
00:34
Top Israeli officials have threatened to repeat the destruction of Gaza in Lebanon if Hezbollah
00:39
attacks continue.
00:41
Incoming fire from Lebanon into Israel continued on Friday with one man suffering wounds from
00:47
shrapnel.
00:48
More than 200,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon since the war in Gaza began, according
00:54
to the International Organization for Migration.
00:58
The US, France and other allies jointly called for a 21-day ceasefire.
01:03
However, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said Israel is striking Hezbollah with full
01:08
force and won't stop until its goals are achieved.
01:15
US Vice President Kamala Harris has slammed suggestions that Kiev should cede territory
01:20
for the sake of peace with Moscow.
01:23
Speaking in Washington, Harris unleashed the criticism of Donald Trump's controversial
01:28
push for Ukraine to quickly cut a deal to end the war.
01:32
These proposals are the same of those of Putin.
01:38
And let us be clear, they are not proposals for peace.
01:43
Instead, they are proposals for surrender, which is dangerous and unacceptable.
01:51
Trump has criticized US assistance for Ukraine, praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and
01:56
faulted Zelensky for the ongoing bloodshed.
02:00
But he rejected Harris' criticisms and insisted that he only wants to stop the horror show
02:05
that's gone on.
02:07
At the presser with Harris, Zelensky said a lasting and just peace was a top priority
02:12
for Ukraine.
02:14
Zelensky was in Washington to present the White House and Congress with his plans for
02:18
reaching an endgame in the war by improving Ukraine's chances on the battlefield.
02:24
And addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday, EU Council President Charles Michel
02:29
said the bloc would support Ukraine for as long as necessary.
02:33
He also urged China to reconsider its support for Russia and use its influence to ensure
02:38
that the United Nations Charter is respected.
02:46
Since the 2006 Lebanon war, the UNIFIL mission has never witnessed a more tense situation.
02:52
Established in 1978, its 10,000 peacekeepers from 50 countries have been regularly patrolling
02:58
along the Blue Line, a UN-run border between Lebanon and Israel, while engaging in efforts
03:03
to de-escalate tensions between the two sides.
03:06
Since Israel launched a new wave of attacks across Lebanon, hitting what it called Hezbollah's
03:11
targets, over 600 people have been killed, with around 90,000 newly displaced in the
03:16
country.
03:41
Israel says it is preparing for a ground invasion.
04:12
On Wednesday, Hezbollah said it had targeted the Mossad headquarters with a missile fired
04:23
toward Tel Aviv, which was later intercepted.
04:26
Meanwhile, the US and France called for a 21-day ceasefire.
04:31
Israel rejected the proposal, saying it will continue to fight against Hezbollah.
04:41
It is a very serious situation.
04:48
The solution is the one we have been talking about for a long time, a solution that both
04:55
countries have indicated in a different way, but the implementation of the 17-0-1 resolution,
05:02
our resolution, which is the same resolution that made sure that the war in 2006 would
05:10
end.
05:13
Uncertainty on both sides has been there for over 10 months, but people have never been
05:18
so concerned as they are now at the prospect that a full-out war could become a reality.
05:23
George Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
05:31
Denmark's justice minister has visited a prison in Kosovo where his country intends to send
05:36
up to 300 inmates to ease overcrowding in the Danish prison system.
05:41
Speaking alongside his Kosovan counterpart Albelina Hadjo, Peter Hummelgaard praised
05:46
what he called the fruitful cooperation between the two countries.
05:51
Now we have come to Kosovo in a need of help, in use of excess capacity in the Kosovarian
06:00
prison and detention facilities, and that is a very big help for Denmark in a time where
06:07
we have a very, very pressured prison and probation services in Denmark.
06:14
This visit here marks the practical implementation of the project, and there is no doubt that
06:21
we would have liked to have seen that started earlier, but nevertheless we are happy that
06:27
we are at this phase now.
06:30
The deal, which was originally signed in 2021, only became a treaty earlier this year when
06:35
it was approved by Kosovo's parliament.
06:38
It will see Pristina lease 300 cells in the Jilan prison to Copenhagen, which will be
06:43
responsible for modernization work to bring the facility in line with Danish standards.
06:48
The deal is worth 15 million euros per year to Kosovo.
06:53
But the decision to move inmates to the Kosovo prison has raised concerns among human rights groups.
07:04
The 12-week legal limit for abortion in Belgium leads more than 300 women a year to travel
07:10
to the Netherlands to terminate their pregnancies, according to pro-choice associations.
07:15
The legislation, unchanged since 1990, also obliges a six-day reflection period, which
07:22
for the centers responsible for carrying out abortions, is incompatible with the reality
07:27
of many women.
07:29
We stopped at 12 weeks of pregnancy, but we have people who unfortunately exceed this
07:36
deadline for a lot of reasons, and not because they want to delay asking for an abortion,
07:41
as we sometimes hear.
07:43
And then there is this completely arbitrary rule, which is the delay of reflection.
07:48
So the woman who makes her request today has to wait six days before she can have an
07:53
abortion, whereas maybe she has already reflected for 15 days before contacting us, or others
07:58
will have done their pregnancy test this morning and then contact us.
08:02
So what we ask is this flexibility to be able to adapt to each situation and to be able
08:06
to respond positively to each situation.
08:08
Having to travel to another country to have an abortion is a reality for many within the
08:13
European Union, due to the legislation of different member states.
08:18
Abortion time limits vary from 10 weeks in Portugal to 24 weeks in the Netherlands.
08:23
More than half have set this limit at 12 weeks.
08:26
In Malta and Poland, it is only legal if the mother's life is in danger.
08:31
In fact, among countries that have more restrictive legislation, the percentage of abortions is
08:38
higher than in those countries that have a free, free and safe access to abortion.
08:49
Therefore, we are not talking about abortion yes, abortion no.
08:53
We are talking about safe abortion or unsafe abortion, because the women who decide to
08:58
abort under different circumstances will continue to do so, because they have done it throughout
09:05
history and throughout the world.
09:10
The European Parliament voted to include access to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
09:16
However, it was not binding, as health issues are considered part of each country's legislative remit.
09:26
As climate change disrupts lives and farming across Europe, there's a gradual cultural shift.
09:33
With restaurants now reimagining menus to reduce food miles and highlight local produce.
09:40
These peppers here, they're from Tangmere peppers just outside of Chichester.
09:45
These carrots here, absolutely beautiful.
09:48
This London restaurant chain has led the local sourcing shift in the UK, solely focusing
09:53
on seasonal foods, those harvested at their peak freshness from within a 50 mile radius.
10:00
We find it very difficult to think anything outside of know your farmer, taste it in the
10:07
field and bring it into the restaurant group.
10:10
These are peaches grown in Kent under plastic tunnels.
10:14
Their approach reflects a broader trend, with 70% of European consumers now expressing a
10:21
preference for locally sourced food.
10:24
Now it's even more essential that we're sustainably minded, we're sourcing from the right suppliers
10:30
and we're using it in season.
10:33
Normally we'd harvest every three days.
10:35
Forty miles from central London, Gerard Vonk is the Dutch manager of Tangmere Airfield
10:41
Nursery, a state-of-the-art controlled environment farm, growing non-native food in an eco-friendly way.
10:48
The produce is over here, whether it's a pepper, a tomato, a strawberry or a courgette.
10:55
These innovative farming techniques enable year-round cultivation of crops, significantly
11:00
reducing reliance on imports.
11:03
Local farming cuts transportation emissions by up to 40%, aligning with the EU's goal
11:09
of decreasing carbon footprints throughout the food supply chain.
11:13
By casting our vote on the three meals a day that we eat, we can be part of that solution.
11:21
With 80% of Europe's population expected to live in cities by 2025, sourcing food locally
11:29
is crucial if countries are to meet their sustainability targets and ensure food security
11:37
for urban populations.
