Kent charity urges for more donations of clothing as the county gets colder

Sateda supports families fleeing domestic violence and says it needs more items such as children's scarves and hats.  Mahima Abedin reports.

00:00It's the first week of autumn and Kent is getting colder, but not everyone will be able

00:05to keep warm. That's why domestic abuse charity Satida is urging for donations of warm clothing

00:11for children and women who might be experiencing clothing poverty.

00:15It's heartbreaking having women come to us saying that what they need, they can't survive,

00:20they need clothing and they're basically trying to afford either clothing or food for their

00:24children so if we can supply them with something then we know those kids are going to get fed

00:28as well.

00:29There are so many women out there that have experienced domestic abuse, sometimes they

00:32flee without any clothing on their backs and their children haven't got anything or they've

00:35economic abuse. If we can reach one or two women, whether it be at these pocket events

00:40or whether it be at our base at Fort Luton in Chatham or our hub in Kemsley, anywhere

00:44where we can reach and support, it's vital that we can help out.

00:48So this stand that's been set up by Satida and Shareware has bags of clothing and it's

00:52for women and young children and they've been open since about 9.30 this morning and I've

00:56been here pretty much since that time and I've seen loads of women come through and

01:00they've been looking through the bags and collecting things like tops for their children

01:04or even shoes but it's not just women who are coming here to collect clothes, there's

01:08also people that are donating too and you can see just how much this stand really means

01:13to them.

01:14I'm here to get support for my children for clothes because we haven't got a lot of accessibility

01:19around here for stuff like that. For shopping and stuff like food items, we don't have a

01:23lot of money so it gives us a lot of money to go shopping for food and items such as

01:28like that and then we can come in and get support with clothes and stuff.

01:31I found some items for my daughter, I've spoke to some lovely people to get some support

01:37and just more information about how I can get support around here.

01:41Although Vienna was able to find clothing for her daughter, the charity says it's in

01:45need of more children's winter clothing.

01:47Everyone's been kind enough to donate loads of summer items but we know we're going to

01:50need winter clothing. Thermals, hats, scarves, gloves, children's winter clothing is really

01:56what we're after at the moment. We've got a lot of women's clothing for winter already

01:59so it's mainly the children's wear.

02:01And with the colder months approaching, it's donations like the ones at Satida that many

02:05vulnerable women and children will be relying on to feel the warmth this winter.
