00:00England came into the encounter in Chesley Street requiring a victory to
00:04keep their one-day series alive against Australia and had to get things right
00:07from the off. England won the toss at midday and elected to field in Chesley
00:11Street with the potential for rain in the air. The first wicket came with the
00:14final ball of the fourth over with Adil Rashid comfortably collecting Matthew's
00:18short attempt at a second six off Joffre Archer in an over, a deep backwards
00:23square leg. Australia powered on into the hundreds losing Mitch Marsh along the
00:28way before Cameron Green and Marnus Lavashane went in subsequent overs, the
00:34latter of which for a duck. The catch of the day came with Australia losing Steve
00:39Smith who thought he had reached the boundary only for Brydon Carse to send
00:43him walking with a perfectly timed leap to claim the ball. Again Australia
00:49rebuilt and approached 300 having only lost Glenn Maxwell on their way. In their
00:54final over Aaron Hardy was run out thanks to the combined efforts of
00:57Matthew Potts and Rashid with Australia reaching 304 for 7 and Alex Carey top
01:02scoring on 77. England then took centre stage but began their chase in
01:07calamitous fashion losing Phil Salt and Ben Duckett for a combined eight runs
01:12all of which came from Duckett. Then came Will Jacks and standing captain Harry
01:16Brooke. The exhibition of batting that followed saw England wrestle control of
01:21the game. Jacks departed for 84 in the 28th over having seen England go from
01:2611 for 2 to 167 for 3. A small cameo from Jamie Smith came before Liam
01:32Livingston decided that not enough boundaries had been hit. His personal
01:36boundary hitting contest brought England closer to the target but the star of the
01:41show was undoubtedly Harry Brooke. The Australians had no answer to his batting
01:45reaching 110 not out. And then came the rain. England would have loved to have
01:49reached the target of their own accord but it was not to be with a DLS method
01:53ultimately gifting them the victory. Standing captain Harry Brooke then
01:58reflected on converting a start into a three-figure total.
02:03I feel like I've just been a little bit stop start this summer. I've had a lot of starts, a lot of 30s, 40s and then not managed to convert which is
02:10frustrating and then obviously to do that today I feel like I'm back in a
02:15good place playing the ball late and my head's still. The longer you bat
02:20usually the easier it gets so I just tried to, I was actually knackered when I got out there after 50 overs in the field.
02:26So yeah I was just trying to play the ball as late as possible and yeah just
02:32try and build a partnership with Jackson. Australia head coach Andrew McDonald was
02:36still able to draw positives from their defeat in Durham. I think you get excited about the players that are actually playing and we saw that Aaron Hardy called it in the same way, some
02:47critical death hitting there to get us up to a total which I thought was a fantastic effort as a batting unit.
02:53The conditions completely changed across the course of the day and we're up against it early.
