EU's top court rejects Catalan separatist Carles Puigdemont's claim to MEP status

The European Court of Justice has backed former European Parliament president Antonio Tajani's decision not to recognise Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont as an MEP, ruling that Tajani "merely did what he was required to do."

00:00The European Court of Justice dismisses the appeal of Catalan pro-independence politicians

00:07Carles Puigdemont and Toni Comín to be considered MEPs which was filed in 2019.

00:15The Court of Justice believes that the lower general court of the EU acted correctly in

00:19considering that the President of the Parliament should follow the official list of MEPs that

00:24came from the document sent by the Member State.

00:29In 2019, Puigdemont and Comín won a seat in the European elections, but having fled

00:34to Belgium in 2017 after the Catalan independence referendum, they were unable to abide by the

00:40Spanish constitution, a key step in order to appear in the document sent to the European

00:45Parliament.

00:48The result that appeared in the Spanish electoral body is seen valid, but the European Parliament

00:53considered that the official list was only the one sent to them by Spain.

01:01The decision is particularly relevant for Comín who ran in the last elections for the

01:05European Parliament and won, but he has so far been unable to take his seat and it looks

01:10like he will remain so after the ruling.
