00:00It's not just the fish that live here.
00:02The mangrove trees are of different marine species.
00:04But there are many other benefits that can be obtained from these trees.
00:08That's why it's important to take care of and multiply the mangrove trees.
00:12Because of that, a project was launched by DOST-Picard
00:16together with Mariano Marcos State University in Ilocos Norte
00:20to take care of the mangrove trees there.
00:24We will now have with us the project leader of this project,
00:29Dr. Arlene Gonzalez and Ms. Annalisa Diaz,
00:33a science research specialist from DOST-Picard,
00:37Technology Transfer and Promotion Division.
00:39Good morning to all of you and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:46Good morning, Ma'am Bea and Sir Patrick and all of our RSDs.
00:50Good morning to all of you.
00:52Good morning, Dayan Kirepoy and Audrey Goraceta.
00:55Alright, let's go to Ma'am Annalisa.
00:57Ma'am, what are the possible results if we don't take care of and preserve our mangrove ecosystem?
01:06So, Ma'am Dayan, we are no longer strangers to the effects of disasters in our country.
01:12And earlier, Sir Engineer Bonnie and Doc BDS discussed the possible effects of climate change.
01:21So, there are disasters like landslides and floodings that we witnessed recently.
01:29And in such instances, the importance of our natural barriers like the mangrove ecosystems
01:36becomes even more critical in protecting our communities from the challenges posed by these hazards.
01:42So, that's why projects like this one that are nature-based and cost effective
01:48so that we can restore and protect our mangrove resources.
01:51And aside from that, because if we don't protect the mangroves,
01:57it is also possible that it will affect our fisheries industry
02:02because this serves as natural barriers against strong breeding grounds for many marine species.
02:11And aside from that, there is also a biodiversity loss.
02:16And there is increased coastal erosion.
02:20So, along with these effects, as Sir Engineer Bonnie said earlier,
02:26there is an increase or release of stored carbon dioxide from the ecosystem.
02:33And if we combine these effects, it will have a devastating impact on our economy
02:40and also on the livelihoods of our communities.
02:43Okay, Dr. Arlene, Mariano Marcos State University and DOST Picard launched a collaboration.
02:51This is the Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Mangrove Management
02:55and Resilient Coastal Communities through Innovative Green Engineering Approach.
02:59Can you please explain this?
03:04Yes, good morning.
03:06Yes, the project is a technology innovation that we want to present to coastal communities
03:14through DOST Picard to adapt innovative ways on how to establish mangrove ecosystems.
03:24We know that despite the efforts of different agencies to increase and restore our mangrove ecosystems,
03:35there are areas where there is failure.
03:38And we found out that one of the problems there is the hydrological conditions.
03:44And the technology that we are trying to integrate to assist the establishment of mangrove ecosystems
03:52is the use of bamboo to create a temporary barrier while our mangroves are growing.
04:00Because the most critical period of mangrove establishment is immediately after planting.
04:08Because we know that in our seas, there is an impact of waves and the flow of our water current.
04:16So that is what actually becomes a barrier for our mangroves to establish their root systems
04:25and eventually they grow over time.
04:29So with the help of our technology, that is what we want to establish here in the Philippines.
04:37That is what we are aiming for, that with the help of our technology,
04:41the establishment of our mangrove areas here in the Philippines will be faster.
04:47Okay, let's go back to the analysts.
04:49Ma'am, what are you doing under this project?
04:52And who are the people involved?
04:56Okay, at this point, let's go back to Doc Arlene and Ma'am Annaliza.
05:00Good morning to you again.
05:02We just had a little technical glitch.
05:04But earlier, Ma'am Annaliza mentioned the organizations and the people who helped her
05:09to make this project possible.
05:12Now, let's go to Ma'am Arlene.
05:14How is the development or progress of the application of this project in Ilocos Norte?
05:20Okay, at this point, we are preparing the materials that we will use
05:26so that we can start building our samples, our pilot models
05:35that we will put in different municipalities.
05:38And hopefully, after our piloting, we will be able to extend our areas
05:44intended to assist the regeneration and establishment of mangroves
05:49in two select municipalities here in Ilocos Norte.
05:54All right.
05:55Is it possible to implement this in other places after Ilocos Norte?
06:02Yes, it is possible.
06:04We will be able to implement this in Ilocos Norte.
06:08Ma'am Arlene, is it possible to implement this in Ilocos Norte?
06:13Yes, it is possible.
06:15Yes, go ahead, Ma'am Annaliza.
06:19Yes, sir.
06:20Actually, this will be our pilot area in PICARD.
06:26This will be our pilot area.
06:29And hopefully, we can adapt and replicate in other locations in the country.
06:34We have already talked to Marine Ruke,
06:37so they are willing to adopt the same SMT interventions
06:42that we will apply here in the Nature-Based Solutions Project in Ilocos Norte.
06:48All right.
06:49A message or a reminder for our Correspondents,
06:52if you have this project, especially those from Ilocos Norte.
06:57Dr. Arlene.
07:00Yes, ma'am.
07:02Our project is intended to help coastal communities.
07:06And one of the things I request,
07:09and although I have already told our partner agencies, DNRN,
07:13to help us to be receptive to coastal communities
07:18in adopting the technology so that we can sustain
07:22and Ilocos Norte can be a piloting model
07:27for Ilocos Norte in terms of implementing an innovative way
07:30to establish mangrove ecosystems.
07:34Ms. Annaliza.
07:37So, on behalf of the UST PICARD,
07:39we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all
07:43and also to our partner, NMSU,
07:45and to our collaborating agencies for supporting this project.
07:49So, let us continue building stronger and more resilient communities
07:53through SMT and innovation.
07:55So, PICARD Polynesia is committed to supporting you and our partners
08:00so we will work toward a brighter, more sustainable future
08:05of the communities with that research.
08:08So, that's all. Thank you very much and good morning to all of us.
08:12All right. Thank you very much for joining us
08:14and for sharing with us your wonderful program for our environment.
08:18This is perfect for the celebration of World Environmental Health Day.
08:21Again, thank you very much, Dr. Arlene and Ms. Annaliza.
08:24Take care.
