00:00In a surprising move, Kim Kardashian recently visited Eric and Lyle Menendez just days after
00:05the premiere of Ryan Murphy's latest installment in the Monster Anthology series.
00:09On September 21, Kim, along with Cooper Koch, who plays Eric in the series, spent time at
00:14Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
00:17The Menendez brothers have been incarcerated there since 1996 for the murder of their parents.
00:22The purpose of their visit?
00:23To discuss the Green Space Project, an initiative by the California Department of Corrections
00:27aimed at reducing recidivism by making prison life more akin to the outside world.
00:32Kim has been a fierce advocate for prison reform since 2018, even studying to become
00:36a lawyer.
00:37Her activism kicked off when she helped Alice Johnson secure her release from a life sentence
00:41after learning about her story on social media.
00:43Since then, Kim has negotiated the release of several low-level offenders and engaged
00:47in discussions with high-profile figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris.
00:52In a recent episode of The Kardashians, she even met Jiffrey Road Blanchard, who was released
00:55in December 2023 after serving over eight years discussing legal reforms and the power
01:00of personal stories.
01:01The Menendez brothers Eric, now 53, and Lyle, now 56, gained notoriety for the tragic murder
01:07of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989.
01:10Their claims of enduring severe abuse from their father shaped their controversial trial.
01:15In the new Netflix series, Cooper Koch stars as Eric with Nicolas Chavez as Lyle and notable
01:19actors like Javier Bardem and Chloé Sevigny as their parents.
01:23Following the series' debut on September 19th, Eric released a statement criticizing
01:27the portrayal of their story, saying,
01:29I believe we've moved on from Lyle's and the ruinous character portrayals of Lyle,
01:33creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show.
01:37He went on to add,
01:38I can only believe they were done so on purpose.
01:41It's with a heavy heart that I say I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naive and inaccurate
01:45about the facts of our lives, so as due to this without bad intent.
01:49Chavez also expressed sadness over what he called Netflix's dishonest portrayal, arguing
01:54that it perpetuates harmful narratives about male abuse victims.
