Tens of thousands of motorcyclists gathered at Portuguese shrine to get helmets blessed

The blessing of the helmets has become one of the great events and one of the great pilgrimages to Fatima's shrine in recent years. This year’s was the largest ever.

00:00Around 180,000 motorcyclists gathered in Portugal to get their helmets blessed.

00:05At the Fatima Shrine in the central part of the country,

00:08this year's annual pilgrimage of the Blessing of Helmets was the largest ever.

00:13The annual pilgrimage is organized by the Blessing of Helmets Association

00:17as well as various national and international motorcycle clubs.

00:30The pilgrimage starts with a parade of motorcyclists carrying Our Lady of Fatima's statue

00:52next to the Basilica of the Holy Trinity.

00:55Afterwards, there's a mass where the bikers' helmets are blessed.

01:00There are thousands of motorcycle accidents in Portugal each year,

01:03with hundreds wounded and more than 120 killed in 2023.
