SPD relieved as exit polls indicate narrow lead in Brandenburg state election

The latest projections at 8pm on Sunday indicate that the ruling SPD maintains its narrow lead on the far-right AfD, but its leader urged members to “put on the euphoria brakes” until the final results are clear.

00:00The exit polls for the East German state of Brandenburg have just come in.

00:08In first place is Chancellor Olaf Scholz's party, the Social Democrats.

00:12Following closely behind is the far-right party, Alternative for Germany.

00:16Another big winner is the Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance,

00:20who is coming in third place, beating the Christian Democrats who are in fourth place.

00:24The biggest losers of this election in Brandenburg so far have been

00:28the Greens and the Linker, who may not have managed to get the 5% threshold

00:32to get a seat in the state parliament.

00:36Minister President in Brandenburg, Dietmar Voigtka, who has been leading

00:40for the past 11 years, staked his entire career on this vote,

00:44saying that if the Social Democrats, the SPD, did not come in first position,

00:48he would step down. But it seems like his gamble has paid off.
