Thousands of people were injured in the attack, with 200 people said to be in a critical condition. Hezbollah said Israel would get its “fair punishment”.

Israel has made no comment on the explosions, but US and Israeli sources have told news websites that the mission to blow up the pagers was brought forward because there were fears Hezbollah officials had become aware of the plan.
