Hello, and welcome to Common Core for Kids Nightly News.
00:10
Tonight we have a very special report on someone amazing.
00:15
That would be me, of course, the number one.
00:18
Let's take a look at the news story that happened to me today.
00:21
Today, I really need your help with learning some basic fractions.
00:26
I have these shapes that my friends and I wanted to play with, but we had a problem.
00:31
Every time I divided the shape to share it, one of us got mad, because we did not get
00:35
as much as the others did, and it did not seem fair.
00:39
This is why we are learning about fractions today, so I can know how to make it fair for
00:43
everyone.
00:46
Here is a circle, and there are three of us who want to share the circle.
00:50
So I broke off two pieces and gave them to my friends.
00:55
They did not think that was fair.
00:57
What do you think?
01:00
Do we each have even pieces of the circle?
01:04
We do not, and that is something important about fractions.
01:08
To be a fraction, you have to have equal pieces.
01:11
Right now, we do not have equal pieces, so this cannot be a fraction.
01:15
Let's try this again with another circle.
01:19
Alright, here we have another circle, and I am going to divide this whole circle into
01:24
three pieces.
01:27
Now we have three pieces, and guess what, they are all equal, which means all three
01:32
of us get the same amount of the circle.
01:34
This is really cool stuff.
01:36
I did not know I liked fractions this much.
01:40
A fraction represents a part of a whole.
01:44
The green part of the circle is mine to play with.
01:48
I have one of three parts of the circle.
01:51
We call this a third.
01:54
I have one third of the whole circle.
01:59
When we write fractions, they look like this.
02:02
We have a number with a line in the middle, and another number underneath.
02:06
The number on the bottom always shows all the parts of the whole circle.
02:12
In this case, we have three parts that make up the whole circle, so we have a three on
02:16
the bottom.
02:18
Now on the top, we have the number one.
02:20
If you look at the third of the circle that is colored green, you will see that there
02:24
is just one part.
02:26
This is my part of the circle.
02:28
The number one on top represents my part of the circle.
02:32
I have one third of the whole circle.
02:36
Okay, my friends went home and gave me back their parts of the circle.
02:41
Now I have all the parts of the circle.
02:43
I have what we call three thirds of the circle.
02:48
I have three parts over the total, which is three parts, which means I have three thirds.
02:55
This also means I have the whole circle all to myself, because I am not sharing any pieces,
03:01
so the three thirds that I have are mine right now.
03:06
Now I have a rectangle, and it is just one piece.
03:10
Oops, it looks like I have more than one piece now.
03:13
I have two pieces, and they are equal to each other, so we have a fraction.
03:18
I have two pieces which make a whole.
03:21
One of these pieces makes up half of the whole shape.
03:24
Together, I have two halves of the whole shape.
03:28
That is awesome!
03:32
Here is another circle, and I divided this circle into four separate parts.
03:38
Right now, I have four pieces over four pieces.
03:43
We call these four fourths.
03:46
There are one, two, three, four pieces, which gives us four fourths, but...
03:52
Hey, I want one!
03:54
Me too!
03:56
Me three!
03:59
I have three sisters that want a piece of the circle.
04:04
I have one fourth of the circle, but can you tell me how many fourths of the circle my
04:08
sisters have?
04:13
They have three fourths of the circle.
04:16
These fractions are easier than I thought.
04:18
Thank you so much for helping me today.
04:20
Now I better give the three fourths to my sisters, or there will be trouble.
04:24
Goodbye!
