05:00You
05:05We've seen Thurman's home run trot a lot this season this one took us from being hopefuls to being heroes
05:14Hey, I wonder if this means a bonus for the
05:30Oh
05:34All right, listen up everybody
05:40We are the Eastfield Champs!
05:45Regional finals here we come. Right, Thurman's gonna take us to the Little League World Series.
05:51I knew we had a little Hank Aaron on our hands.
05:53You work great! You're a wonderful team!
05:55Yeah!
05:57Hey, you think I should give some of these pics to the Eastfield Daily News?
05:59Nah, let's give Sports Illustrated first credit.
06:01All right, let's celebrate! Come on!
06:11Hey Nick, let's see the old knuckleball. Come on. Let's see the old slider, the old fastball, the old curveball, the old...
06:18Nyah!
06:22Screwball!
06:25We didn't get a big locker room celebration
06:29but we got the next best thing.
06:31Take that thing so far out.
06:33I can't believe you tried to throw me a curveball.
06:35Look, I trade you Guerrero, Robin Young, and Gooden for Will Clark's rookie card.
06:37Nah, that's a decent offer, Lewis, but I'm not willing to part with Will Clark. Not at any price. No reason, no how, no way.
06:51Hey, what you guys got there?
06:53Oh, right! A Will Clark rookie! For me? Thanks!
06:57Sure. It's yours, big guy.
06:59Yeah, how about that last pitch, huh? No way am I gonna let Bozo get a fastball by me. I made him pay, huh?
07:05You said it. No way. Right, Lewis?
07:07No way.
07:09Oh, I forgot the warm-ups.
07:11Well, look at the All-Stars.
07:13Hey Martin, what's with the outfit? Did your girl scout you up on a field trip or what?
07:19Lay off, Crider. We happen to be celebrating. We're the All-City Champs.
07:23You mean chumps, right? Is your hat full of mush like your head?
07:27Knock it off. Give that back. Give me back my hat. Come on, Derek, give it back.
07:31You owe it to Army.
07:33Hey, I bet it'd hurt real bad if you were to lose this earring. Know what I mean? Now beat it!
07:47Hey, one of you guys wanna get me a napkin?
07:49Yeah, I got it, I got it.
07:51Who knows? If I gave Thurman my Willie Mays card, maybe he'd keep Derek off my case for life.
07:57Thurman will probably be signed right out of high school with a Major League contract.
08:03Okay, enough about Thurman Munster already.
08:06That's Miller.
08:07I just call him like I see him.
08:09All right, you two. The kid is amazing, though. No one can deny that.
08:13Yeah.
08:14Nick's probably right about the pros. Thurman is definitely Major League material.
08:17Oh, yes, just think. The next step is real greatness, and then he'll have a candy bar after him.
08:25Hello? Oh, sure. Hold on. It's for you, Coach.
08:33Hello?
08:34Oh, hi, Harvey.
08:36Who's that, Mom?
08:37Well, it ain't Elvis.
08:39What? You're kidding.
08:42Oh, sure, I can hardly wait.
08:46It'll be just like old times.
08:49Yeah, right.
08:52See you next week.
08:55So long, you big bag of wind.
08:58David?
09:00Well, of all the rotten luck.
09:03Harvey Stover, the biggest blowhard in the league. He's managing the team we're playing in the Regionals.
09:08So?
09:09So, he's the guy who managed the team that beat us last year.
09:13Oh, yeah.
09:14Well, I promise you one thing.
09:17Not this year.
09:19No, sorry, buddy.
09:21This year, I get even.
09:23This year, it's payback time.
09:25This year, Harvey, I've got Thurman Miller.
09:44Tell me again. What's the point of all this?
09:48Strength.
09:50If you're strong, you can't lose.
09:53Just look at Thurman. He hit that homer today because of the power from his forearms.
09:57Forearms? No wonder I can't lift this thing.
10:01I've only got two.
10:04See? Training really helps. You've already improved your reach.
10:07Ho, ho.
10:10Oh, hi, Dad.
10:15How's the weight training?
10:16Fine.
10:17Put another couple of books in this thing.
10:20Sure.
10:21You know, Nick, this game is really important to me. Well, to all of us.
10:25Now, go ahead. Stack them up.
10:27Anyway, in a game like this, everybody's really got to pull their own weight.
10:32Okay.
10:34I'll, uh, help you with the weights later.
10:38What I'm saying is you and the other guys really have to turn it up a notch.
10:42Thurman's really got to have more support on the mound and at bat.
10:46I mean, that's why I really want you to give it all you've got this week.
10:49And the other guys, too.
10:50All right, Dad.
10:51All right. That's the spirit.
10:55Nick?
10:56Yeah, Dad?
10:57I've got to go.
11:00Nick, I really want to win this one.
11:13Practice is the most important part of our team.
11:16It's how we learn exactly what to do.
11:18Which, of course, is whatever Thurman does.
11:29All right.
11:40Okay, guys, everybody in.
11:42Thurman, take some batting practice.
11:44All right, Anthony, you know what to work on.
11:46TJ, remember both hands on the flies.
11:48All right, go on out there and work on your fundamentals.
11:51Nick, Lewis, the outfield, work on some flies.
11:55Hey, Dave.
11:57How's the second best manager in the league?
11:59Fine, fine. Good to see you, Harvey.
12:01You know, Dave, considering the last couple of years,
12:04nobody would really blame you if you just forfeited the game on Saturday.
12:08I mean, you'd save us all a lot of trouble.
12:12Hey, that's a nice hitting. Who's your assistant?
12:14Oh, that's Thurman Miller.
12:16He's my pitcher.
12:18Your what?
12:19Hey, you look a little pale, Harvey.
12:21I hope you're not coming down with it.
12:23No, I hope you're not coming down with something like chicken pox.
12:26Hey, what are you trying to pull here, Martin?
12:28That guy played triple-A for the Cards last season. I'm sure of it.
12:32He's 13 years old. He meets all the league requirements.
12:35Anything else you want to know, Sherlock?
12:38Hey, you want to get ugly, I can get ugly.
12:40I'll bet.
12:41I got a few surprises too, Martin.
12:43And we'll see who gets the last laugh, just like last year.
12:46Hey, last year's history, pal, just like your winning streak.
12:51See that cloud?
12:53That's the shape of the trophy we're going to win.
12:58Man, I wish I could hit like that.
13:00Yeah.
13:06What an incredible afternoon for baseball, ladies and gentlemen.
13:09And now, stepping up to the plate, it's Slam the Man Martin.
13:13One of the great home run hitters.
13:15And on the mound, it is none other than Aurel the Bulldog Persheiser.
13:20What an incredible matchup. Boy, look at that face, would you?
13:23Two future Hall of Famers about to battle it out here at the bottom of the ninth of this championship game.
13:29Slam looks determined and confident.
13:31Aurel seems just a little bit tense. Who can blame him, huh?
13:35Two men on, no outs.
13:40Aurel looks in for the sign.
13:43Here's the pitch.
13:49Oh, a fastball out over the plate.
13:51A lion drags a shark.
13:53He makes the catch.
13:54That makes the tag.
13:56Oh, and a first.
13:57A triple play.
13:58I can't believe it.
13:59Slam the Man has hit him to a triple play.
14:01Unbelievable, ladies and gentlemen.
14:04Oh, and a first.
14:05A triple play.
14:06I can't believe it.
14:07Slam the Man has hit him to a triple play.
14:09Unbelievable, ladies and gentlemen.
14:12Hey, don't feel so bad, Slam.
14:14Remember, there's more to life than winning.
14:17Besides, no single player can expect to do it all.
14:20It takes a whole team to win a game.
14:30Wake up out there.
14:32It takes a whole team to win a game, Nick.
14:35Everybody heads up ball.
14:54Brother, who's that supposed to be?
14:57Are you kidding?
14:58The guy on that card is headed for the Hall of Fame.
15:01That's right.
15:02The geek Hall of Fame.
15:03Look, I got Oxo Nubbins, Slats Feldo.
15:07Hey, I tell you what.
15:09In trade for your Rheinsandberg,
15:10you could be the proud owner of Otho Mounds,
15:13a legend in his own grime.
15:15McGee, get a brain.
15:17Boy, Otho had a great swing.
15:22Get out!
15:24You take me out of the ball game.
15:28I hope you have baseball out of your system now, Pintar Breath.
15:31Are you kidding?
15:32And give up all that fame and fortune?
15:34Big leagues mean big bucks, just in commercials alone.
15:39And here's the pitch.
15:41Oh, this could be out of here, folks.
15:44He goes back.
15:46And he makes the catch!
15:48That was me back in 1962,
15:50when I was known as the Say What Kid.
15:53These days, I call the big plays behind the mic and in the press box.
15:57And after a hard day,
16:01I like to freshen up with a little splash of old lice.
16:10You know, these days when I work up a big thirst,
16:13I like to quench it with an ice-cold canine cola.
16:19Say, little fella, you got any treats?
16:24Nah.
16:26Go fish.
16:28Affirmative.
16:30Drink canine cola today!
16:34Ralph?
16:38You know, when I played ball, it was a tough game.
16:41But not as tough as the payments on my new shimmy truck.
16:49And you talk about tough!
16:54You ought to see the way this baby handles!
17:03I can't hold her!
17:08So drive a shimmy today!
17:14As the big game approached, Thurman and I started watching our diet.
17:18In other words, he ate, and I watched.
17:23More ice.
17:27Hi.
17:28Hi.
17:29Um...
17:30Sarah.
17:31Right.
17:33Some more pound cake?
17:35Yeah, sure.
17:37Hey, clean my cleats like I asked?
17:39Yeah.
17:41You could eat off these cleats.
17:43But don't try, you might chip a tooth.
17:45Yeah, right.
17:46Well, I gotta go.
17:47Yeah.
17:49See you later, Nick, and, um, see you later, Karen.
17:54That was unbelievable.
17:56Yeah, that guy sure can eat, huh?
17:58I'll say.
17:59Practically, no, I don't mean what he ate.
18:02Nick, it's the way you fawn all over him.
18:04It just doesn't seem right.
18:06Thurman is a star, okay?
18:08You should even be proud he came by for a bite.
18:10A bite?
18:11Godzilla did less damage.
18:13Nick, isn't it possible that he's just a little too big?
18:17Isn't it possible that you're so caught up with Thurman as a baseball player
18:20that you can't see what he's like as a person?
18:22I mean, it's okay to admire someone,
18:24but you... you worship him like he's some kind of idol.
18:28If he were nice...
18:30What's being nice got to do with it?
18:32You're just jealous because we're about to become regional champs.
18:36I'm not jealous, Nick.
18:37That's not the point.
18:41God is supposed to be the center of our attention.
18:44The one we trust, remember?
18:46Sure.
18:48But you just wait.
18:49After tomorrow, you're going to be telling all your friends
18:51that Thurman Miller actually spoke to you.
18:55Karen.
18:59What a great day for baseball.
19:01Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,
19:03and welcome to the All-State Regional Championship.
19:16Let's go!
19:19Today's game features the Freeland Dodgers and the Eastfield Braves.
19:23The winner is on the road to the Little League World Series.
19:33Okay, guys, stay loose, stay focused.
19:36Make them play your game.
19:38Let's get it, Les!
19:40We're going to do it again this year!
19:42You can beat these guys. Let's go.
19:44Yeah!
19:46Let's go, Braves!
19:51And the Braves take the field.
20:11Bottom of the third, and still no score.
20:17Yeah!
20:32No, no, stay, stay!
20:38Come on, you guys, go!
20:40I can't lose myself.
20:42Top of the fifth in the Dodgers' lead, two to nothing.
20:50You can hit him.
20:51You can hit him.
20:54You're out.
21:13How about that?
21:14A two-run homer from Richard Berman Miller.
21:18Way behind the score.
21:24Second-base stick.
21:25So with two runs on four hits, the Dodgers take a commanding 6-2 lead.
21:47It looked extremely rocky for the Eastfield Nine that day.
21:51The score stood 5-7 with an inning left to play.
21:56So when Eddie died at second and Peter did the same,
22:00a power reefed the features of the patrons of the game.
22:05Then Nick let drive a single to the wonderment of all.
22:10And the understated Lewis tore the cover off the ball.
22:13And when the dust had lifted and they saw what had occurred,
22:17there was Lewis safe at second and Nick a-huggin' third.
22:22There was ease in Thurman's manner as he stepped up to his place.
22:26There was pride in Thurman's bearing and a smile upon his face.
22:31And when responding to the cheers, he lightly tipped his hat.
22:35No stranger in the crowd could doubt.
22:38It's Thurman at the bat.
22:41Then from the pitcher's twisted arm, a fiery baseball sped.
22:45Study my style.
22:47Said Thurman.
22:48Strike one.
22:49The umpire said.
22:51From the benches full of people, there went up a muffled roar.
22:56Like the beating of the storm waves on the stern and distant shore.
23:01Kill him! Kill the umpire!
23:03Shouted someone on the stands.
23:05And it's likely that it killed him.
23:07And that Thurman raised his hand.
23:09With a smile of noble charity, great Thurman's visit shone.
23:14He stilled the rising tune.
23:17He made the game go on.
23:19He signaled to the pitcher.
23:21And once more the spheroid flew!
23:24But Thurman still ignored it.
23:26And the umpire said.
23:28Strike two.
23:31The sneer is gone from Thurman's lips.
23:34His teeth are clenched in hate.
23:36He pounds with cruel vengeance.
23:39His bat upon the plate.
23:41And now the pitcher holds the ball.
23:43And now he lets it go.
23:45And now the air is shattered by the force of Thurman's blow.
23:49Oh, somewhere in this fabled land.
24:13The sun is shining bright.
24:15The band is playing somewhere.
24:17And somewhere hearts are light.
24:20And somewhere men are happy.
24:22And somewhere children shout.
24:25But there is no joy in Eastfield.
24:28Mighty Thurman has struck it out.
24:46How are we doing?
24:50Still losing.
24:56I guess I didn't show it, but...
25:00I'm real proud of the way you and the other guys played today.
25:07I've been thinking about how bad I wanted this game.
25:11You know, beat Harvey Stover.
25:13Manage a championship team.
25:17Conquer the world.
25:21It seemed like we had all the ingredients.
25:24Yeah, especially Thurman.
25:28Yeah.
25:33Well, I guess I'm going to have to go.
25:35I'm going to miss you.
25:38Well, pal, I guess we both learned that...
25:42when you dream without the Lord...
25:45you better dream again.
25:48Someone tried to tell me that.
25:52But...
25:54Hey, you guys okay?
25:57Yeah.
25:59Come on.
26:07Come on.
26:16We got a little worried when you didn't show at home.
26:23How are you doing, coach?
26:25Oh, feeling better by the minute.
26:29You okay?
26:31Yeah.
26:33I'm sorry about the other day.
26:36We'll get him next year.
26:38Next year?
26:39Yeah, and I'm going to play softball next year.
26:41So maybe you could...
26:43Oh, no, wait a minute.
26:44Let's talk this over.
26:46I think I may take another shot.
26:49It's like I always say.
26:51It's not over till the bad boy sings.
26:53Cause it's a one...
26:55two...
26:56three...
26:57stretcher out of the old...
26:59ball...
27:01game!
27:05The game begins and you want to win
27:08It's a lifelong dream
27:11Don't lose sight
27:13Cause there's more to life than a victory
27:18It doesn't matter if you wanna be a superstar
27:25It doesn't care who the winners and the losers are
27:30You gotta hold on
27:33To what you're dreaming of
27:37Set your sights on heaven
27:39And reach for the sky
27:41You gotta hold on
27:44Why do it on your own?
27:49Put your trust in him
27:51Cause he's on your side
27:53So hold on
28:04You can't rely on the strength of men
28:08To pull you through
28:11They'll build you up
28:13And they'll let you down
28:15In the end you'll lose
28:18Put your faith in the one who is in control
28:25He'll help you make it to your highest goal
28:29So hold on
28:34To what you're dreaming of
28:38Set your sights on heaven
28:40And reach for the sky
28:42You gotta hold on
28:45Why do it on your own?
28:50Put your trust in him
28:52Cause he's on your side
28:54You gotta hold on
28:57To what you're dreaming of
29:01Set your sights on heaven
29:03And reach for the sky
29:05You gotta hold on
29:08Why do it on your own?
29:12Put your trust in him
29:14Cause he's on your side
