00:00More than 11,000 tons of sulfur dioxide was released by the volcano Canlaon in Negros Island within 24 hours yesterday.
00:09According to PBOX, that's the largest amount of sulfur dioxide released by Canlaon in one day since they set a record in 2009.
00:18It is also said that the chance of a magmatic eruption or lava eruption of the volcano is high, but it is not yet known how many.
00:25In 1902, the last magmatic eruption occurred in Canlaon.
00:29Since then, only phreatic or steam-driven eruptions have occurred.
00:34Aside from that, there are almost 80 eruptions recorded in the volcano in the past 24 hours.
00:40The volcano remains at alert level 2, so it is still prohibited to enter the 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.
00:50In the middle of another eruption of the volcano Canlaon, the people around it are alerted for evacuation.
00:56Aileen Pedrezo of GMA Regional TV reports.
01:03Some families in Negros Occidental are preparing to evacuate.
01:08The volcano erupted again.
01:12If you are not careful, you will be in danger.
01:17You will be in danger if you are not careful.
01:22Four barangays in La Carlota are being guarded now because it is close to the volcano.
01:26In the town of La Castillana, residents are also preparing to evacuate.
01:30I was worried if it was raining.
01:34Instead of taking a bath, I just took a bath.
01:39According to the LGU, residents are being reminded not to enter the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone of the volcano.
01:47Residents in four barangays in Canlaon City are being forced to evacuate.
01:52More than 100 families were brought to various evacuation centers.
01:57Classes were also canceled and tourist spots in the area were closed.
02:01Our recommendation is to avoid exposure to SO2, avoid outdoor activities.
02:12Aileen Pedrezo of GMA Regional TV reporting for GMA Integrated News.
02:18Let's update on the situation in Negros Island.
02:21The activity of the volcano Canlaon is still ongoing.
02:23Aileen Pedrezo of GMA Regional TV reporting for GMA Integrated News.
02:27Aileen?
02:29Rafi, due to the ongoing activity of Mount Canlaon, residents are still on alert near the volcano.
02:37LGUs are ordering forced evacuation at any time.
02:42According to the Mount Canlaon Observatory of PHIVOC in La Carlota City,
02:47the possibility of raising the volcano to alert level 3 has increased
02:52due to the eruption of the volcano and volcanic earthquakes.
02:57If the volcano is raised to alert level 3 from 4 kilometers,
03:01the so-called permanent danger zone will be reduced to 6 kilometers.
03:05Residents in this area are also being told to evacuate at any time.
03:10Residents are also being reminded, especially in places where the volcano may erupt,
03:16to wear face masks.
03:18Classes are still suspended in all areas in the town of La Castellana,
03:22as well as in the barangays in La Carlota City near the volcano.
03:26Barangay officials are also helping LGUs to warn residents
03:31to be alert and be ready at any time for evacuation.
03:37Our SO2 emission reached 11,556 tons per day.
03:46Our SO2 emission is the highest record we have recorded
03:51within the monitoring period of Mount Canlaon Volcano.
03:54It can now elevate to alert level 3.
04:00At alert level 3, you can expect magmatic intrusions from the volcano.
04:07At any time, there can be eruptions, which is dangerous for people near the volcano.
04:17In the latest report of the DSWD-6,
04:21the La Castellana LGU is conducting a simulation exercise for response operations
04:27where evacuation centers and vehicles are being prepared for evacuation.
04:34Rafi, Connie?
04:35Thank you very much, Aileen Pedrezo of GMA Regional TV.
04:41Let's update on the monitoring of PHIVOX at Mount Canlaon Volcano in Negros Island.
04:44Our guest is PHIVOX Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division Chief,
04:48Maria Antonia Bornas.
04:50Good morning and welcome to the latest news.
04:53Good morning, Sir Rafi.
04:55Can you please explain what PHIVOX is saying about the anomalous activity of Mount Canlaon
05:00and the possibility of magmatic eruptions?
05:04Since we raised the alert level of June 3 after the volcano erupted,
05:09we have seen a lot of volcano tectonic earthquakes.
05:14And there has been an increase in sulfur dioxide emissions in the volcano.
05:20It is higher than normal because the seismicity background
05:26is only 0 to 5 earthquakes per day.
05:30And the sulfur dioxide is only 300 tons per day.
05:34Yesterday, we recorded an increase of 79 VT earthquakes within 24 hours.
05:43In the past two days, our record of volcano tectonic earthquakes has been steady.
05:49And yesterday, the sulfur dioxide emissions increased by 11,556 tons per day.
05:55This is the highest number that we have recorded for the volcano.
06:00Now, what does this mean when we have volcano tectonic earthquakes?
06:06And this is located in one part of the volcano.
06:10This could indicate that the magma is making a pathway
06:16so that it can rise above the volcano.
06:20And if we have an increase in sulfur dioxide,
06:23this is one of the many volcanic gases that is contained in the magma.
06:29This does not escape the magma much when the magma is deep.
06:34But when the magma goes down, the sulfur dioxide disappears.
06:39That is why our volcanologists are monitoring this volcanic gas
06:45because this is an indication that we are having a decrease in magma.
06:50And this is one of the parameters of anomalies before the volcano erupts.
06:57So this means that the magma is rising slowly from the bottom of the volcano.
07:01How significant is it that since 1902,
07:04the last time the magmatic eruption occurred in Canlaon,
07:07how significant is it in terms of the strength of this possible eruption?
07:12We cannot say.
07:14We have a lot of volcanoes that can sleep for a long time.
07:19But it does not mean that because it sleeps for a long time,
07:23it has the equivalent strength.
07:27Canlaon is one of our long-lived volcanoes.
07:32It is in a volcanic ridge because it erupts for a long time
07:38and it has left behind other centers or craters.
07:44There are a lot of craters in that ridge.
07:47The crater migrates to the south.
07:54That is why it has a long ridge.
07:56So Canlaon is a bit old.
07:58It is a big volcano.
08:00It means that it has a long riposte period.
08:04If we look at the geology of the volcano,
08:08it has more lava flow than the explosive eruption.
08:14But it is capable of both.
08:17You mentioned the lava flow.
08:18How dangerous is the magmatic eruption when the lava flows?
08:23Where does it go?
08:25We do not know that.
08:27We have a hazard map.
08:29We know that the lava flows in Canlaon volcano
08:35can reach 6 to 16 kilometers.
08:41There are long lava flows in Canlaon volcano.
08:45The risk of an effusive eruption is lower than that of an explosive eruption.
08:54But there is a trade-off.
08:57If we experience a lava flow eruption,
09:00it will last for a long time.
09:03So our displacement will last longer.
09:07Okay.
09:08Yes.
09:09Okay.
09:10Let's wait for the update on Canlaon.
09:13If it will rise or fall,
09:15your alert level.
09:16Thank you very much for your time this afternoon.
09:19You're welcome.
09:20Take care.
09:21This is Maria Antonia Bornas of DOST Fivox.
