US remembers 9/11 terror attack 23 years on

On 11 September 2001, four hijacked planes killed nearly 3,000 people, a date that falls at the height of the US presidential election period every four years.

00:00The United States is marking 23 years since the September 11th terror attacks, when nearly

00:073,000 people were killed in the coordinated hijack of four aeroplanes.

00:14The planes were purposely crashed into the Pentagon, the Twin Towers of the World Trade

00:18Center and a field in Pennsylvania.

00:24President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump and

00:28Republican Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance all attended the 9-11 memorial ceremony

00:34at the World Trade Center in New York.

00:39Biden and Harris are also set to attend similar events at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania,

00:45where Trump will visit the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville in the same state.

00:53Since 2012, however, politicians have been excluded from speaking at anniversary ceremonies

00:58in order to place more focus on survivors and relatives of victims.

01:04The 9-11 attacks have left a scar on American history, leaving behind thousands of bereaved

01:10relatives and traumatized survivors.

01:15They also altered U.S. foreign policy and domestic security practices and shifted the

01:20mindset of many Americans who had not previously felt vulnerable to attacks by foreign extremists.
