Lowest water levels ever in Bosnia and Poland: record-breaking summer wreaks drought

Lakes and rivers across Europe are drying up as the hottest summer on record comes to an end. In Poland and Bosnia, this has caused critically low water levels.

00:00Record high temperatures and low rainfall are having severe consequences across Europe.

00:07In Bosnia, soaring temperatures this summer have caused parts of some lakes to dry up entirely.

00:13The Bileca Lake is normally a source of hydroelectric energy in Bosnia, as well as a popular swimming spot.

00:20This year, critically low water levels broke new records,

00:23impacting both the energy and tourism industry in the Balkan country.

00:29When we stand here, the water comes all the way to here.

00:34When the water level rises, you can't see anything under the water.

00:39It's a great place to swim.

00:41However, this year, the water level dropped drastically,

00:45and it's really uncomfortable for swimmers.

00:49However, it feels like we're on another planet.

00:58In Poland, another record was broken, with the water gauge of the Vistula River in Warsaw

01:03showing just 24 centimeters on Monday after a hot weekend.

01:08Hydrologists had been warning for days that the river would reach its lowest levels ever recorded.

01:15Monday's reading broke the record from nine years ago,

01:18when the Vistula River level dropped to 26 centimeters three times.
