Libyan coastguard returns boat with 64 migrants to shore

The incident comes just days after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Libya and 22 out of 32 people on board went missing, presumed drowned.

00:00Libya's Coast Guard on Friday returned a boat carrying 64 migrants to Syet, the town they

00:06had just set off from. On Wednesday, the Italian Coast Guard released this dramatic video of

00:11them rescuing nine migrants after their boat capsized off the island of Lampedusa. They

00:17also recovered a body of one of the migrants. The boat had set off from Libya with 32 people

00:22on board from Egypt and Syria. By the time of the rescue, 22 were already missing, presumed

00:28drowned when the boat capsized. According to the International Organization of Migration,

00:34nearly 67,000 migrants have gone missing in the Mediterranean in the past 10 years. They are

00:40presumed to have perished in the sea as they tried desperately to reach Europe. So far this year,

00:4643,000 migrants have reached Italy, far fewer than the previous year when around 20,000 arrived

00:53in just one month alone in August.
