00:00Since water is cleaner than oil, there have been many attempts to make it a source of electricity for a long time.
00:16That's why Game Changers Energy Sector is the fuel cell developed by the DOST Industrial Technology Development Institute.
00:24Let's go! Let's change the game!
00:30For the longest time, we've been relying on the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal to produce electricity or to run our cars.
00:41The downside is that 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from this, as well as 90% of carbon dioxide emissions.
00:51But it's possible to generate electricity without pollution.
00:56One of the breakthrough technologies for clean and sustainable energy is the fuel cell.
01:02Here, hydrogen, a type of gas element that can also be found in water, will be used to produce electricity.
01:12That's what the first Fuel Cell Research and Development Center of the country, headed by Dr. Ronaldo Pareño Jr., is developing.
01:22One of the things we want to address is energy security.
01:26But at the same time, we also want to address the problems associated with the environment like the air pollution.
01:35Compared to using fossil fuels, hydrogen has no carbon emissions.
01:42That's why they're developing a fuel cell stack device that will convert it to electricity.
01:49It is twice as efficient as the internal combustion engine that we use for cars and also for power production.
01:58We can save as much as 30-40% for our energy consumption.
02:05Its sustainability could be produced from water.
02:10To make it easier to understand and visualize, Dr. Ronald Pareño made a mock-up.
02:18Here on this side is our hydrogen tank.
02:22It is attached to our fuel cell stack.
02:26This fuel cell stack will convert this hydrogen into electrical energy.
02:34That's what will be used in cars.
02:36If you're curious, how can this be used for a regular household?
02:41We have this hydrogen storage going into the fuel cell stack.
02:48It will be converted into electrical energy that will be used to power your electronics.
02:57To speed up the development of the Clean Energy Alternative,
03:02the Department of Energy and DOST ITD-I appointed the Fuel Cell R&D Laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment.
03:10In that timeline, we will be able to produce the first viable prototype design by the end of 2025 or mid-2026.
03:22Mga Kapuso, a breakthrough in sustainable and clean energy technology
03:26that we hope to benefit from in the near future.
