00:00Ranger Bill, warrior of the woodland. Struggling against extreme odds,
00:23traveling dangerous trails, fighting the many enemies of nature. This is the job
00:29of the guardian of the forest, Ranger Bill. Pouring rain, freezing cold,
00:34blistering heat, snow, floods, bears, rattlesnakes, mountain lions. Yes, all this
00:40in exchange for the satisfaction and pride of a job well done.
00:50One of the meanest and most dangerous of the animals in the United States is the
00:55buffalo bull. He's a savage fighter, always walking around with a chip on his
01:00shoulder. He attacks without warning and moves like a bolt of lightning. The
01:06Rangers never get close to the buffalo herd unless they're riding fast and
01:09experienced horses. Each herd has one bull who's the big boss. When he gets old
01:16and loses some of his speed and fighting ability, one of the younger bulls will
01:20challenge the big boss. A fight follows and the older animal is run out of the
01:25herd. The dethroned bull becomes a lone marauder. He vents his humiliation and
01:31anger with savagery upon any living man or beast. So now it's time to join Bill
01:37and his Rangers as they hunt the mad bison.
01:50Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, steady, steady, easy, big boy. Lee, where are ya? In here, Lefty. Lefty, take it easy. You're out of breath. What's wrong? Some beast has attacked our stallions. It got Whitey. It got Whitey? What do you mean, Lefty? Whitey's lying out on the range. He's badly wounded. Almost cut the ribbons. Well, let's go.
02:21Boy, I sure like springtime. Everything's so new and fresh. That's right, pal. Almost like starting life all over again. Buffalo must feel that way, too. There isn't one of them around the feeding barns.
02:48Well, they moved out to the range, all right. Won't see them around the ranch buildings until early winter. They sure like their free feed when the ranging is tough, though. You said it. Can't say that I blame them. Oh, I guess not. Say, did you tell Stumpy and Graywolf we were going out? No, I didn't, pal. Better stop here by the horse corral and take the
03:13saddles off Storm and Bess. Not used to wearing leather yet. Oh, Bess. Oh, boy. Oh, girl. Oh, Storm. Easy, Bess, old girl, easy. Hey, Bill, I can see where the saddle blanket kind of wore a spot or two on Bess' back. Boy, it's sure been a long time since you wore a saddle. Yeah, Storm, too. Let's turn him into the corral. Okay. Okay, get going, boy. Get on, boy, Storm.
03:42Storm says thanks for taking the pack off his back. Well, it doesn't look like Stumpy and Graywolf are here. Yeah, they'd have come out of the cabin by now. I don't see their horses either. Are we going to wait until they get back? Yeah, I want to look over the buildings and fences anyhow, see if they need repair. I'll help you. Okay, let's start with the Wrangler's cabin.
04:12Easy, Whitey, big boy. We're almost through patching you up. It's a good thing you came along when you did, Lefty, or Whitey would have died. Yeah, he sure was bleeding bad. Easy, Whitey boy, easy. Yeah, give me some more of that bed sheet. Yeah, sure.
04:41Here you are, Lee. Thanks. You just bind up the gash in his hind leg and we'll have him managed. I got the salve smeared into the wound, Lee. Yeah, I'll have it wrapped up in a jiffy. Easy, Whitey boy, easy. Do you want help, Lee? No, I can make it all right. You better keep your eye on the range in case whatever or whoever did this comes back.
05:06I've been watching. I wish it would come back so I could empty my rifle into it. Yeah, I wonder if that would stop it, Lefty. Yeah, maybe you have a point there. There's got to be some beast to down a stallion, especially Whitey.
05:23You said it. There, I'm finished. Yeah, I'll go out and get the truck so we can take Whitey to the barns where he'll be safe. It'll be easier for us to take care of him there. Okay, I'll stand guard while you go on. Right. I'll send a couple of the wranglers out to help you. One rifle might not be enough.
05:54Okay. Easy, boy. You get a chance to run later. Stand still, Matildy. Stop skitterishin' around like a minnow. I think Buffalo heard. Settle down, all right, Stumpy. You do too, Gray Wolf. You got the back of freedom feelin' out of their bones.
06:12They sure was cuttin' loose with monkey-shy hands for a while there. I thought for sure they stampede. Yeah, when they had their hands full, sonny, I was one recruited to the meanest stampeders alive. Maybe we go back to cabin now and take another look at herd this afternoon. Nope, I wouldn't do that yet, sonny. Why, what do you mean? We're missin' the big boss, Buffalo. Huh? You mean old snort gone?
06:36He sure is, Gray Wolf. I thought you seen that. I busy watch young stock. Not notice old snort not with herd. We better find him. Not alone we ain't. You think he have fight with young bull? He sure do. See that young upstart out there? Looks kinda scarred up, like he's been in the scrap. You're right, old-timer. We better find out for sure.
06:59That's why I'm waitin' for the herd to settle down and quit spookin'. I mean we could ride down kinda easy like and take a look at that young roughneck. Not good idea. In about hour we should be able to ride close to the herd. Yeah, I think so. Good thing we got fresh mounts. Those critters might give us a chase. Especially the new big boss.
07:29Lee, Emil and I'll stay out here and see what we can make out of the tracks where the fight took place. Okay, Lefty. Dick and Fred will give me a hand gettin' Whitey out of the truck. Soon as we got Whitey bedded down in the barn, we'll be out to relieve you from guardin' the herd. Okay, you better get goin'. You'll have to drive slow. Right.
08:00Well, let's see what we can make out of the hoof prints where Whitey fought this... this... thing, whatever it is, Emil. Okay, Lefty. I sure can't figure it out. I don't think any of us will be able to.
08:20Look here at these cloven hoof marks. Yeah. What kind of an animal large enough to kill a stallion has cloven hooves? I don't know of any around these parts. Maybe this animal escaped from the Noddy Pine Zoo or from a trainload of wild animals. That's a thought, Emil. But we would have been warned. If that had happened, I'd think. Yeah. Perhaps you're right, Lefty.
08:44Your idea is better than mine because I can't imagine what kind of an animal this is. I guess we're just wastin' time. I can't make heads or tails out of this. Neither can I. Soon as Dick and Sid come out to spell us off guard, we'll go back to the horse barns and take a look at Whitey.
09:15Easy now, Matildy. We don't want to spook those buffalo. Stumpy, you're right. There are battle scars all over young Bull's hide. They sure are, sonny. By the looks of him, old Snort almost won. Old Snort, plenty tough fighter. Beating Bull long time. Watch out, Ralph. He ain't actin' too kindly to us. Maybe we move away and he settle down. Good idea. We've seen what we wanted to. Step it up a little, Matildy.
09:43Get him up, King. We'd better get back to ranch and tell Bill. Old Snort on loose. You're right, sonny. Old Snort's gotta be found, crowned, or shocked, one or t'other.
09:54You'll be all right, Whitey, old boy. Couple of weeks of takin' it easy and you'll be as good as new. I hope so, Lee. I don't take a hankering to havin' one of our prize stallions cut to pieces, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to stop it from happenin' again.
10:21Yeah, I've been doin' a lot of thinkin' about that, Lefty. I take it the hoof prints didn't give you any clues, huh? Not a thing. What or who did it is still a mystery. Yeah, we'd better get some help to find out. Who'll we get? Bill Jefferson and his Rangers.
10:38That's the whole story, Bill. Old Snort just up and vamoosed. It impossible to pick up trail. Heard cover his trail plenty hard. Well, we'd better find him. Let's get some provisions packed and hit the trail. Ah, I figure that's what you do.
11:04That's up to it, boys. I'm gonna find Old Snort before he does any damage. Maybe this is the first lawsuit comin' now. Hey, those two fellas are comin' in like a hurricane. Ah, something's wrong, that's for sure. It's Lefty and Lee Foreman. Hello, fellas. Why the hard riding?
11:25Howdy, fellas. Hi, Lefty, Lee. Bill, we've got trouble and we don't know what it is. Oh? Tell me more, Lefty. Well, some kind of beast almost killed one of our best stallions. That's right, Bill. We'd like you to come over and take a look at the stallion and the range where the battle took place.
11:46Okay, fellas. You'll saddle up and go back to your ranch with you. Henry, let's saddle up. Stumpy, Gray Wolf, you better water your horses. We might have quite a bit of riding to do.
11:58Easy, Whitey boy. We're just lookin'. Put the bandage back on, Lee. I think we're seein' all we need to. Don't you think so, Gray Wolf? Stumpy? Ah, we see plenty from kind of wounds, Whitey has. Yep, they tell quite a story.
12:25What are you fellas talkin' about? Do you know what kind of beast attacked our horses? Perhaps we do, Lefty. Let's ride out in your range and take a look around where you found Whitey. Sure. You think you'll have the answer then? Yes, Lee, I'm sure we will. Well, let's go.
12:42All right, pull up, boys. There's plenty of sign here on the ground. Plenty bad fight take place all right. Old Snort didn't do this. I'll eat him. Horns and all. Old Snort? Who's he?
13:11A buffalo bull from our herd, Lefty. You mean a buffalo did this? What's the big idea of lettin' him get out? All of our horses are in danger now. We ought to sue Uncle Sam for damages. Whitey won first prize at the horse show last year. We'll run our finest breeding stock on this range, Bill. What's the matter with you guys? Can't you control your buffalo? I think you rangers are slippin'. You mean sleeping at the switch, Lee.
13:37Just a minute, fellas. You honestly think we let Old Snort get away from us on purpose? You tell him, Sonny. Maybe they think we stay up nights figuring out ways to ruin all the herds on the range. Yeah, did you fellas ever meet up with an insane buffalo bull? What do you mean, insane buffalo bull, Henry?
13:57Well, Old Snort was the big boss of the herd. The younger bull challenged him for his job and they fought. Old Snort lost and he automatically had to take off or be killed. Henry Wright, stumping I.C. Battlescars on young bull. I guess we sounded off like tin horns, fellas. Please accept my apologies for the insults I threw at you.
14:22Oh, forget it. I'd be steamed up too if one of my best stallions got the treatment Whitey got. Oh, that doesn't excuse us, Bill. I'm very sorry for what I said and what I did. You think you can help us get that buffalo, Old Snort, as you call him?
14:40We'll get him, fellas. I don't know how long it'll take us, but we're going after the mad bison.
14:57Looks like we've got company, Bill. How'd you guess? There must be a dozen men waiting for us at the cabin. I have a good idea what they're going to say, too. Old Snort must have paid them a visit or two. He must be on more money to hit that many ranches. That's what I'm afraid of, Gray Wolf. Old Snort's really gone off his rocker. Well, I might as well face the music. Those fellas look pretty hot under the collar.
15:23Gentlemen, gentlemen, we can't all talk at once. That's right, Bill. We've all got plenty to say. That's right. You better get that buffalo and get him fast. Yeah, you heard Josh, Bill. We all feel the same way. That's right. We've been chasing, shooting and trying to get him ourselves. We couldn't do it. He's too smart for us.
15:49You're going to have plenty of damage suits in your hands if you don't get him. He's already wrecked some of my fencing. It's a good thing I saw him or he'd have gotten to my cabin. And he's done plenty to the rest of the boys, too.
16:01We've seen some of Old Snort's work, fellas. Josh, Les, we agree with you. We've got to get the buffalo and do it soon. How soon we get Old Snort is questionable. We'll try our level best to make it soon. I suggest that you return to your ranches and keep guards posted until we let you know that Old Snort's out of commission.
16:28Well, let's get back home, men, so the rangers can get to work.
16:42Wow. Looks like we'd better get a move on.
16:45Yep. Either we get Old Snort or he'll get us. This'll be a fight to the finish this time.
16:58How are we going to do this, honey? What have you got up your sleeve besides your arm?
17:04I don't have much in the way of ideas, old-timer. The only thing we can do is ride out and try to find Old Snort's trail and follow it.
17:12You're right, Bill. That's all we can do.
17:15I'm afraid we'll have to wait for the old boy to jump us. Most likely we'll get the chance to jump him.
17:21Yeah, and he'll kill us.
17:22Keep your rifles laying across your saddles. When we get to meet Old Snort, there won't be time to pull your rifles from your saddle holsters.
17:30I'll ride out first. Stumpy, Gray Wolf, you flank me about 50 feet back.
17:36Hey, you mean I'm going to bring up the rear?
17:38Yes, pal, you are. Don't think you've been disgraced.
17:42I'm going to bring up the front.
17:44I'm going to bring up the back.
17:46I'm going to bring up the front.
17:48I'm going to bring up the back.
17:49Hey, pal, you are. Don't think you've been disgraced. Old Snort can and might come at us from any direction.
17:56I don't want us to be bunched up when that happens.
17:59Okay, I'm happy now.
18:01All right, let's go.
18:03Let's go back.
18:16Ah, this Old Snort's trail, all right. But maybe it's too old to be any good.
18:22I think so, young fellow. This trail's three days old.
18:26We'll have to keep crossing and recrossing this part of the country until we find Old Snort's fresh trail.
18:32Maybe he isn't in this area at all anymore, Bill.
18:35We'll find out how to. It might take a week to do it. We'll find out.
18:50Hey, hold up there, fellas. Here's another of that rascal's trails.
18:55Looks pretty fresh, too.
18:57Ah, you're right, Stumpy. Buffalo passed this way maybe half day ago.
19:01Hot dog. Now we can get this game of hide-and-seek over with.
19:12We've lost the trail, fellas.
19:14I think we pick up trail straight ahead. Ground here too hard.
19:17Yep. I didn't see any sign where Old Snort turned.
19:26Hey, Bill. How much longer is this hard ground gonna last?
19:30It'll go another mile or so.
19:32If they don't pick up Old Snort's trail by then, they'll have to go back.
19:44Hey, there's a trail sign ahead. Let's get after him, boys.
19:49Come on, McKinney.
19:55Let's go.
20:06Keep your eyes open, your rifles ready. We could run into Old Snort any time now.
20:11Yeah, you said it. This is like running the gauntlet or something.
20:15His beady eyes might be looking at us right now.
20:18He's thinking how nice we'd look dangling on the end of his horns.
20:21Eight, nine hundred pounds of gold buffalo. Nothing to joke about.
20:25You said it, sonny. Old Snort's left.
20:28Hey, look out, Bill!
20:30Hey, come on, Stormy. Get going, big boy.
20:33Run, Bill!
20:35Then do something before he gets Bill and Storm.
20:37We can't. You'll find him, Bill.
20:39Come on, Storm.
20:41Come on, Storm. Come on, big boy.
20:43Ramp. Head up, boy. Ramp.
20:46Alive. Dependent.
20:48Come on, boy.
20:50Slow down, boy. All right.
20:52Easy, boy. Good boy, Storm.
20:55Take it easy now, fella.
20:57Old Snort gave up trying to catch you.
20:59Good boy, Storm.
21:01Whoa, Storm.
21:03Hold it up, fella.
21:05Wow. Can Storm run?
21:07Man alive. He took off like the wind.
21:10It's a good thing you did or old Snort would have nailed both of them.
21:13I don't say he would have, Stumpy.
21:15He wouldn't have.
21:17He wouldn't have.
21:19He wouldn't have.
21:21He wouldn't have.
21:23He wouldn't have.
21:25He wouldn't have.
21:27He wouldn't have.
21:28He wouldn't have.
21:30I don't say he would have, Stumpy.
21:32Didn't even dare shift my weight to shoot.
21:34Feared I'd throw Storm off stride.
21:36Was nip and tuck for a couple hundred yards.
21:39Then old Snort's age began to tell.
21:41But he's still plenty fast.
21:43I'll say he is.
21:45Boy, the way he came out of that canyon,
21:47just like he'd been shot out of a gun.
21:49Yeah, let's not waste time chinning.
21:51The old boy will be kind of tired from that run.
21:53Maybe this is the right time to get him.
21:55All right, Stumpy.
21:56Where'd he go?
21:57He headed north, across range toward canyon country.
22:00All right, let's go.
22:01Get him up, Cain.
22:02Come on, Mortelli!
22:12Boy, old Snort must really be moving.
22:14He sure is, Henry.
22:15This trail's plain as the nose on your face.
22:18Must be worried.
22:20Be more careful about this trail.
22:22He's heading right for the canyon, isn't he?
22:24Yep, he's what he's doing, all right, Henry.
22:27Boxy belly, that bison!
22:32Whoa, Storm!
22:34Whoa, Mortelli!
22:36He's in that canyon straight ahead, isn't he, Bill?
22:39Yeah.
22:40We're not riding in there until we've tried to get him some other way.
22:43What's your plan, Bill?
22:45Gray Wolf, you and Henry barricade yourself here at the mouth of the canyon.
22:49Stumpy, you and I are going up to the ridge.
22:54All right.
23:10Hold it, Stumpy.
23:12You see him, Bill?
23:14Yes, old timer, I do.
23:16Are you sure?
23:18I can't see him.
23:20Look down on the canyon floor.
23:22To the right of the hump rock in the middle of the canyon.
23:25Hey!
23:27There he is, big as life!
23:30Let me walk around and take a crack at him with old Betsy.
23:34Don't do any good, Stumpy.
23:36The canyon ridge overhangs right where he is.
23:40You ever see such a smart operator?
23:43Yeah, let's try it from here.
23:45All right, go ahead.
23:47Hold your ears.
23:52Well, he moved.
23:54I'm afraid he's gunsmart by now, Stumpy.
23:57Yeah, not only that, but he's gone deeper behind the rocks and back at the hump.
24:02Well, only one thing to do.
24:05What's that?
24:06Go in after him.
24:08Stumpy, Henry, understand your instructions?
24:22I do, Bill.
24:23Me too, sonny.
24:25Don't worry, old snort ain't gonna get out of this here canyon.
24:28If he shows his head, I'll bounce rifle balls off of it.
24:32Okay.
24:33Remember, old snort doesn't get out of this canyon alive.
24:37If he does, I'll hold you two responsible.
24:39He won't, Bill. Believe me.
24:41I do.
24:43You ready, Gray Wolf?
24:44I all set, Bill.
24:46Fine. I'll go in first.
24:48You follow 50 feet behind.
24:50Keep that distance so I'll have room to maneuver.
24:53That's a good idea, Gray Wolf.
24:55Things might suddenly get pretty exciting in there.
24:58You say mothball that time, Stumpy.
25:00Let's go, Bill.
25:01Come on, Storm.
25:02You got a job to do inside.
25:04Get up, King.
25:05I got to get old snort if he gets Bill.
25:21Keep a sharp eye, Gray Wolf.
25:23Last Stumpy and I saw him, he was in back of the hump rock.
25:27He's got a move since then.
25:29I watch everywhere at the same time, Bill.
25:35Now we're halfway to the hump rock, Gray Wolf.
25:38He'd not be long now.
25:40Old snort fight soon.
25:45You better give me a little more room, Gray Wolf.
25:47Here's the hump rock.
25:49I do.
25:50You be plenty ready now.
25:51Hey, there he is.
25:52Let's get him, Storm.
25:54Shoot, Bill.
25:57Look out, Gray Wolf.
25:58He's coming after you.
26:00I shoot too.
26:01That's his shot.
26:02Good shot.
26:05I can't get in position to finish him, though.
26:07I got him.
26:08Keep going, Bill.
26:09Good.
26:10Now I can finish him.
26:11Get around, Storm.
26:12Watch canyon wall.
26:14Easy, Storm.
26:15Easy, boss.
26:16Hey, I lost my rifle.
26:18I can't get away.
26:19Get him up, King.
26:20Shoot, Gray Wolf.
26:21I get him.
26:25You got him.
26:28You all right, Bill?
26:30Yeah.
26:31Old Storm and I forgot about the canyon wall.
26:34That was fine shooting, Gray Wolf.
26:36Another ten feet and old Snort would have fixed us good.
26:40I'm glad I'm in position to kill Buffalo.
26:43So am I.
26:44I don't like killing animals, but this time I'm glad old Snort's dead.
26:49Well, let's get Henry and Stumpy.
26:52Then we'll pass the word to the ranchers that we got the bad bison.
27:04Bill, you and your rangers did us a real good turn by killing that bull buffalo.
27:15We want to apologize for the nasty remarks we made.
27:18That goes double for me, Bill.
27:20And the rest of you fellas.
27:21Well, thanks, Josh.
27:22Alas, we only did the job we were supposed to do.
27:26Sorry old Snort did the damage he did before we got him.
27:30Uncle Sam will pay you for the damage, though.
27:33Now, Lefty, how's Whitey?
27:35He's coming along nicely, Bill.
27:38I sure wouldn't have been in your boots for anything from what Gray Wolf tells me.
27:43I wouldn't be in my boots if it weren't for Gray Wolf and his fine shooting.
27:47I do nothing, Bill.
27:49You won who go in first.
27:51Well, regardless of who gets the medal, I can say one thing.
27:55What's that, Stumpy?
27:56Old Snort sure put up a good fight, but it wasn't good enough.
28:01Poor fella ain't gonna be the big boss anymore.
28:14Well, I sure wouldn't have changed places with Bill when he was trapped by old Snort.
28:18And it was no easy spot for Gray Wolf, either.
28:21Those shots had to count.
28:24Well, we'll see you next week for more adventure with...
28:27Ranger Bill!
28:57Every week at this time, when your local station gives us this chance to get together.
29:02See you then!
