Australia to limit foreign student enrolments in migration crackdown

Australia said on Tuesday (Aug 27) it would limit the enrolment number of international students at 270,000 for 2025, as the government looks to rein in record migration that has contributed to a spike in home rental prices.  The decision follows a raft of actions since last year to end COVID-era concessions for foreign students and workers in Australia that helped businesses recruit staff locally while strict border controls kept overseas workers out. 00:08the pandemic, and about 50 per cent more in our private vocational and training providers.

00:16Students are back, but so are the shocks, people that are seeking to exploit this industry

00:22to make a quick buck, and we're implementing a number of reforms to tackle that.

00:28Today I can announce that, subject to the Bill passing, the overall number of international

00:33students starting a course next year will be set at 270,000.

00:39This includes higher education courses and vocational education and training courses.

00:45What this means is next year that there will be about the same number of international

00:51students starting a course here as there were before the pandemic.

00:57There'll be more in our universities and there'll be fewer in our private vocational providers.

01:06International education is extremely important, and these reforms are designed to make it

01:10better and fairer, and set it up on a more sustainable footing going forward.
