00:00A political analyst has dismissed UMNO-U's chief Dr. Atmal Saleh's call for the party
00:08to work towards regaining dominance, because one party's superiority is a thing of the
00:14past.
00:15Awang Azman Pawi of University Malaya said power-sharing is now common in many countries,
00:21including some of Malaysia's neighbours in Southeast Asia.
00:25He also said that the presence of several parties in the government provides necessary
00:30checks and balances.
00:32On Thursday, Atmal said UMNO should not be content with merely being part of the federal
00:37government, emphasising that UMNO should look to becoming the dominant force once again.
00:42Meanwhile, O.E. Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said that while it
00:48was possible for UMNO to return to its former glory, it must rediscover its original purpose
00:54and undertake significant reforms.
00:57He added that UMNO needs to shed its image of benefiting a selected few and return to
01:02championing benefits for the masses.
