Branyas was listed by the Gerontology Research Group as the oldest known person in the world after the death of French nun Lucile Randon last year.

00:00Maria Branes, an American-born Spaniard considered the world's oldest person at 117, has died.
00:09Her family said she passed in her sleep, at peace and without pain.
00:14Branes was born in San Francisco on the 4th of March in 1907, before her family returned
00:19to Spain when she was young.
00:21At the time of her death, she was living in a nursing home in the Catalan town of Olot.
00:27The next oldest person in the world is reportedly Japan's Tomiko Itouka, who is 116 years old.
